2021년 12월 28일 중앙선 복선전철화 사업의 완공으로 폐지된 임포역 부지에는 1차 사업으로 약 3,637㎡ 규모와 길이 260m의 실외정원이 조성되어 작년에 완공됐다.

이번 2차 사업은 미활용 중인 잔여부지와 임포역 주변을 활용해 정원을 약 250m를 확장할 계획으로, 지역 주민과 방문객에게 더욱 큰 혜택을 제공하고, 관광객 유치와 유동 인구 증가에도 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

시는 지난 12월 11일 국가철도공단 철도유휴부지 활용심의위원회의 최종 제안 발표를 통해 이번 사업의 추진 기회를 확보했다. 특히, 주민 친화 시설로 조성된 실외정원을 국가철도공단에 기부채납하는 조건으로 폐철도 유휴부지를 20년간 무상으로 사용할 수 있게 되어 큰 예산 절감 효과를 거두고 있다.

기차 없는 임포역 철길숲 실외정원 조성사업은 철도 운영으로 인해 발생했던 소음과 보행 단절 등으로 불편을 겪었던 지역 주민의 삶의 질 향상과 함께, 노후화된 지역 환경을 개선하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다.

영천시 공원관리사업소 관계자는 “2024년 상반기 ‘성내철길숲’과 하반기 ‘북안면 임포마을 실외정원(1차)’의 완공을 통해 폐철도 유휴부지를 효과적으로 활용하는 성과를 거뒀다”며, “지방 인구 소멸 위기를 극복하고 모두가 살기 좋은 도시로 거듭나기 위해 지속적으로 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
