이날 집회는 종교단체가 국가비상기도회라는 이름으로 붙일만큼 종교적 색채가 짙은 행사였다. 때문에 집회 참석자 중 많은 이들이 개신교 소속의 보수적 성향 사람들이었다.  단체로 동원된 듯, 집회 현장 곳곳에서는 인원수를 세는 이들의 모습도 보였고, 밖의 추운 날씨를 경계하는 이들은 동대구역 로비 의자에서 집회 상황을 지켜봤다.

국민의힘은 이날 집회에 당원 동원을 하지 않았다. 다만, 지역 출신 국회의원들 몇몇이 잠깐 현장을 찾아 참석자들과 인사를 하고는 자리를 떴다. 일부 집회 참가자들은 이들 의원들에 욕설을 하기도 했고, 일부 정치인은 “같은 마음을 갖고 있지 않느냐”며 “그런 식으로 삿대질, 욕설하지 마시라”고 자제를 요청하는 모습도 보였다. 

이날 현장에는 강대식, 우재준, 김승수, 윤재옥, 권영진, 이인선, 조지연, 이달희 국회의원등이 참석했다. 참석한 정치인들도 마음은 무거워 보였다. 모 국회의원은 “탄핵 반대와 부정선거와 혼재되어 있는 것 같아서 참석을 해야 할지 말지를 두고 고민이 있었다”며“ 부정선거와 관련해서는 당의 입장이 이분들 주장과는 많이 다르다”고 말했다.

이들 국회의원들 외에 집회현장에는 의외의 인물이 단상에 올라 마이크까지 잡았다. 참석 일정을 알렸던 이철우 경상북도지사는 박성만 경북도의회 의장과 함께 예정대로 일찌감치 현장에 도착해 주최측과 다른 참석자들과 인사했다. 

이 지사는 단상에 올라 “6.25때 대구.경북 나라를 지켰다”고 강조했다. 그러면서 “제가 시원하게 연설하고 싶지만, (선거법 때문에) 연설할 수가 없다”며 자신이 주장하고 싶은 메시지를 애국가 1절로 대신했다. 

같은 광역단체장인 홍준표 대구시장은 참석하지 않았다. 현장에서는 같은 상황인 이철우 지사를 비유하며 홍 시장의 불참 이유를 비난했다. 다만, 그는 일찌감치 관련법을 들며 불참할 수밖에 없는 이유를 제시했다. 홍 시장은 이날도 "탄핵 반대 집회에 참가해서 실상을 알리는 연설을 하고 싶지만 가면 무고연대에서 선거법 위반으로 또 고발할 것"이라며 이쉽다는 마음을 전했다. 

현장과 다른 곳에서는 두 단체장의 행보에 대한 논란이 이어졌다. 두 사람이 특정 정당 출신이기는 하나 대구와 경북에서는 탄핵을 지지하거나 유보적인 입장을 취하는 시도민이 40%에 이른다. (1월 21-23일 한국갤럽 조사) 논란은 이들 40%의 시도민이 두 단체장이 속했던 모 정당의 입장과 다르다하여 무시당할 이유는 없다는 것.

대구지역 국민의힘 모 당협 관계자는 이날 본지에 “비록 현장에서 선거법에 저촉될 만한 발언이나 행동까지는 없었을지 몰라도 이철우 경북도지사의 집회 참석은 상식을 뛰어넘는 수준”이라며 “이는 더도 말고 덜도 말고 자신의 정치적 계산 때문으로밖에 해석할 수 없다. 보수 진보를 넘어 이들의 참석이 어떤 의미를 가지는지를 스스로 곱씹어봐야 한다”고 말했다.

이날 집회는 두 시부터 시작됐으나, 현장으로 가는 주변은 그 시각 이전부터 대혼잡을 빚었다. 대구지하철은 이날 동대구역 광장으로 향하는 손님들로 혼잡했고, 1분씩 지연되는 소동도 빚어졌다. 동대구역 인근의 주차장은 평소에도 주차난이 심각하다. 이날 인근 도로는 집회 참석 차량들로 아수라장이었다.

한편, 이날 집회 참석자는 전국에서 모여든 개신교 신도들이 대다수인 가운데 부정선거를 주장하는 단체 사람들도 상당수 눈에 띄었다. 특히, 20대와 30대 젊은 사람들도 자주 목격됐다. 국민의힘 모 국회의원은 이와 관련 “윤 대통령의 탄핵까지는 힘들지 몰라도 오늘 참석한 사람들 면면을 보니까 조기 대선이 실시되더라도 우리 보수 정당이 희망을 가질 수 있는 계기, 모멘텀이 될 수 있다는 가능성을 보았다”고 평가했다.
