【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시가 포스텍 의과대학 설립을 위한 행보를 이어가고 있는 가운데 지난 12일 이강덕 시장이 서울 여의도 켄싱턴 호텔에서 열린 한국미래의료혁신연구회(이하 한미연) 제5회 세미나에 참석해 지역의료 혁신과 의사과학자 양성의 중요성을 강조하며 포스텍 의과대학 설립의 필요성을 적극 피력했다.

13일 포항시에 따르면 이날 세미나에는 임종윤 코리그룹 회장과 강대희 원격의료학회 회장을 비롯해 윤석준 고려대학교 보건대학원 원장, 이경수 영남대학교 경영전략부총장, 황만순 한국투자파트너스 대표 등 의료기관 관계자 및 연구진 등이 참석했다.

한미연은 지난해 3월 출범한 연구회로 한국의 의료 경쟁력과 미래 가치를 높이기 위한 의료 혁신 정책을 연구·제안하는 싱크탱크 역할을 하고 있다. 전 서울대학교 의대 학장인 강대희 원격의료학회 회장과 전 바이오협회 이사장인 임종윤 코리그룹 회장이 공동대표를 맡고 있다.

이번 세미나는 ‘대한민국 의료개혁의 방향’을 주제로 진행됐으며, 윤석준 고려대학교 보건대학원 원장의 기조 강연을 시작으로 이경수 영남대학교 경영전략부총장과 황만순 한국투자파트너스 대표의 주제 발표가 이어졌다.

이후 패널토론을 진행하며 ‘지역의료 혁신의 방향’, ‘바이오 의료 산업 발전’ 등 다양한 의제를 심도 있게 논의하는 시간을 가졌다.

이날 참석자들은 기존의 의료시스템에서 의학 전문지식으로 해결하기 어려웠던 문제를 첨단 공학을 기반으로 바이오 연구의 토대를 다질 수 있는 의사과학자 양성으로 해결할 수 있다는 데 공감하며, 열악한 지역의료를 혁신하기 위해 의사 과학자 양성이 하나의 대안이 될 수 있을 것으로 전망했다.

특히 이강덕 시장은 지역의료 불균형 해소를 위한 방안으로 첨단기술과 의학을 융합한 최첨단 의료 기술 도입이 필수적이며, 이를 실현하기 위해서는 의사과학자 양성에 적극 나서야 한다고 강조했다.

또한 공학과 의학이 융합된 교육을 제공할 수 있는 ‘포스텍 의과대학’이 의사과학자 양성의 최적안임을 역설하며 의료계와 관계기관의 관심과 지원을 요청했다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “의료계 각 분야 전문가들의 다양한 시각과 경험을 공유하며, 지역의료 혁신 방향을 논의하는 뜻깊은 시간이 됐다”며, “포스텍의 우수한 연구 역량과 인적자원을 바탕으로 지역에 양질의 의료서비스를 제공하고, 미래 의료를 선도할 의사과학자 양성을 위해 포스텍 의대 설립에 힘을 보태 줄 것을 당부한다”고 말했다.

한편 국회에서 2026학년도 의대 정원 논의가 본격화되는 가운데 포항시는 경북도와 함께 포스텍 의과대학 정원확보를 위해 국회 방문, 정책 포럼 및 토론회 등으로 의료계 및 관계 부처와 협의를 지속하며 적극 대응해 나갈 계획이다.

As Pohang City continues its steps toward establishing POSTECH Medical School, Mayor Lee Kang-deok attended the 5th seminar of the Korea Future Medical Innovation Research Association (hereinafter referred to as the Korea-USA) held at the Kensington Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul on the 12th, where he emphasized the importance of regional medical innovation and fostering physician scientists and actively expressed the necessity of establishing POSTECH Medical School.

According to Pohang City on the 13th, the seminar was attended by medical institution officials and researchers, including Lim Jong-yoon, Chairman of the Korea Future Medical Innovation Research Association, Kang Dae-hee, Chairman of the Telemedicine Society, Yoon Seok-joon, Dean of the Graduate School of Public Health at Korea University, Lee Kyung-soo, Vice President of Business Strategy at Yeungnam University, and Hwang Man-soon, CEO of Korea Investment Partners.

The Korea-USA Research Association, which was launched in March of last year, serves as a think tank that researches and proposes medical innovation policies to enhance Korea’s medical competitiveness and future value. Former Dean of Seoul National University College of Medicine, Kang Dae-hee, President of the Telemedicine Society, and former Chairman of the Bio Association, Lim Jong-yoon, Chairman of the Corey Group, are co-representatives.

This seminar was held under the theme of ‘The Direction of Medical Reform in Korea’, and began with a keynote speech by Dean Yoon Seok-joon of the Graduate School of Public Health at Korea University, followed by presentations by Vice President of Business Strategy at Yeungnam University, Lee Kyung-soo, and CEO of Korea Investment Partners, Hwang Man-soon.

Afterwards, a panel discussion was held to discuss various agendas in depth, such as ‘The Direction of Regional Medical Innovation’ and ‘Development of the Biomedical Industry’.

The participants agreed that problems that were difficult to solve with medical expertise in the existing medical system can be solved by training physician scientists who can lay the foundation for bio research based on advanced engineering, and they predicted that training physician scientists could be an alternative to innovating poor regional medical care.

In particular, Mayor Lee Kang-deok emphasized that the introduction of cutting-edge medical technology that combines cutting-edge technology and medicine is essential to resolve the imbalance in regional medical care, and that in order to realize this, we must actively engage in training physician scientists.

He also emphasized that the ‘POSTECH College of Medicine’, which can provide education that combines engineering and medicine, is the best option for training physician scientists, and requested interest and support from the medical community and related organizations.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang said, “It was a meaningful time to share the diverse perspectives and experiences of experts in each field of the medical community and discuss the direction of regional medical innovation,” and added, “I ask that you support the establishment of the POSTECH College of Medicine to provide high-quality medical services to the region based on POSTECH’s excellent research capabilities and human resources and to train physician scientists who will lead future medical care.”

Meanwhile, as the discussion on the 2026 medical school enrollment quota is in full swing in the National Assembly, Pohang City plans to actively respond by continuing consultations with the medical community and related ministries through visits to the National Assembly, policy forums, and discussions with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province to secure the quota for POSTECH's medical school.
