【브레이크뉴스 경북 】이성현 기자= 오는 4월 2일 실시되는 보궐 선거에 출마하는 국민의힘 후보자들의 도덕성을 중요시 봐야 한다는 목소리가 커지고 있다. 

 대구와 경북지역에서도 자치단체장 1곳을 비롯해 광역의원 2곳, 기초의원 1곳 등 4개의 보궐 선거가 실시된다. 이들 지역 중 한 곳만 제외하고 나머지 3곳이 사법적으로 문제가 되어 직을 잃어 보궐 선거가 실시된다. 때문에 어느때보다 ’도덕적인 후보자가 지역 일꾼으로 당선되어야 한다‘는 목소리가 대두되고 있다. 

특히 광역단체장 보궐 선거가 없는 상황에서 기초단체장 선거가 실시되는 경북 김천시장 보궐선거는 여러 측면에서 정치권 및 국민들의 관심이 높다. 

김천시민과 지역 정치권은 김충섭 전 시장이 관련 법률 위반으로 구속 및 실형을 거듭하며 시장직을 잃자, 허탈하다는 당혹감에 쌓여 있다. 재선 재임 기간 중 시장직을 잃게 된 김 전 시장은 정당 공천 과정에서 걸러질 수 있었지만, 판결이 나지 않았다는 이유로 무시됐다. 그 결과가 지금과 같은 결과를 낳았고, 국민의힘은 김천시민에 큰 상처를 남겼다.  

김천시를 찾았을 때 시민들은 위와 같은 아쉬움을 호소했다. 그러면서 이번 선거는 “정말 깨끗한 사람이 당선되어 그동안의 김천시의 부정적인 이미지를 탈피시켜야 한다”고 토로했다. 

경북지역의 정치권에서는 “출마한 이들의 면면을 보면 저 사람들이 과연 공직에 출마를 해도 괜찮을지에 대한 깊은 의문과 우려가 있다.”라면서 “특히, 김천시장 선거는 자칫하다가는 제2의 김충섭 상황이 다시 벌어지는 게 아닌지 의문이 있는 게 사실”이라고 토로했다. 

이같은 우려의 배경에는 김천시장 국민의힘 후보들의 전과 기록과 죄질이 좋지 않은데 있다. 실제, A,B,C 후보의 경우 많기는 5회에서 적게는 1회까지 세 사람 전과만 해도 9개나 된다. 특히 A 후보는 다수의 전과를 보유하고 있으면서 최근 선거법 위반 혐의로 검찰에 고발되어 지난 17일부터 경찰이 수사에 착수한 것으로 확인됐다.  

정치권의 또다른 측면 이야기를 들어보면 조기대선을 걱정하는 목소리도 들린다. 특히, 보수성향이 짙은 까닭인지 국민의힘 공천 경과 과정에 깊은 우려의 목소리가 높다. 

박남수 정치 평론가는 “광역단체장 선거가 있다면 광역에 쏠리겠지만, 지금은 기초단체장 선거에 관심이 갈 수밖에 없다. 특히, 조기 대선 실시 여부에 따라 관심은 확연히 달라지고 그렇게 되면 김천 등 기초단체장 선거가 초미의 관심사가 될 수밖에 없다”면서 “(지금까지만 놓고 보면) 이재명 대표를 상대해야 하는 국민의힘으로서는 이 대표의 비도덕적인 부분을 집중  공격해야 하고, 그럴 수밖에 없다. 때문에 4월 보궐 선거에서 국민의힘 후보의 도덕성은 정말 중요하다”고 꼬집었다. 

이는 민주당 이재명 대표의 비도덕적인 측면을 강조하면서도 김천시장 후보 등 4월 보궐선거에서 국민의힘이 어떤 후보를 공천해야 하는지, 후보들의 절대적인 도덕성을 강조한 것으로 풀이된다.
