‘천원의 아침밥 지원사업’은 대학생들의 아침식사 결식률을 낮추고 건강한 식습관을 장려하기 위한 사업으로, 대학생들에게 1천 원으로 아침 식사를 제공한다. 

특히 2023년 기준으로 대학생의 아침식사 결식률이 57.2%에 달하는 점을 고려해, 아침밥을 챙길 수 있도록 지원하고 있다. 이 사업은 아침식사의 결식률을 낮추고, 쌀 소비 촉진을 도모하는 데 목적이 있다.

대구시는 2023년부터 4개 대학교 34,500명을 지원하며 사업을 시작했으며, 2024년에는 6개 대학교 91,900명으로 사업 규모가 확장됐다. 올해는 7개 대학교에 7천만 원의 시비를 투입해 약 7만 명의 학생에게 아침밥을 제공할 계획이다.

이 사업은 정부에서 2천 원, 대구시에서 1천 원, 대학교에서 5백 원~1천5백 원을 각각 지원하며, 학생들은 1천 원만 부담하면 된다.

박기환 대구광역시 경제국장은 “천원의 아침밥 지원사업이 대학생들의 식비 부담을 줄이고, 건강한 식습관을 촉진하는 동시에 쌀 소비 촉진과 농가 소득 증대에도 기여할 것”이라고 기대감을 밝혔다.
