이강덕 포항시장은 6일 서울 코엑스에서 열린 ‘인터배터리 2025’ 행사에 참여해 글로벌 네트워크를 확대하며, 서울 인터컨티넨탈 파르나스 호텔에서 열린 ‘포항 이차전지 전문가 간담회’에 참석해 산업 환경 변화에 따른 지역 대응 방안을 모색했다.

이날 간담회에는 연구기관, 기업, 전문 리서치 기관 등 산학연 전문가들이 참석해 글로벌 이차전지 산업 동향과 전망을 공유하고, 포항의 대응 방안에 대한 다양한 의견을 나눴다. 이 시장은 급변하는 이차전지 시장의 변동성에 대해 공감하며, 대한민국 이차전지 산업의 경쟁력을 강화하기 위해 중앙과 지방정부의 지속적인 지원이 필요하다고 강조했다.

특히 이 시장은 이차전지 산업의 위기 상황을 극복하기 위해 산업위기특별대응지역 지정을 건의했으며, 기업에 대한 실질적인 지원을 강화하기 위한 특별법 제정 등을 위한 노력도 기울이고 있다고 밝혔다. 이어진 토론에서는 글로벌 이차전지 산업의 주요 현안과 쟁점들이 논의되었으며, 트럼프 행정부 출범의 영향, 한국판 인플레이션 감축법(IRA) 도입 가능성 등 글로벌 동향을 반영한 대응 방안에 대해 깊이 있는 논의가 이루어졌다.

이 시장은 간담회를 마친 후 ‘인터배터리 2025’ 현장의 경북&포항 공동 홍보관을 방문하여 참가 기업 관계자들을 격려했으며, 에코프로, 포스코퓨처엠, 다원화학 등 지역 기업들의 홍보관을 돌아보며 이차전지 기술 및 제품 동향을 점검했다. 또한 주한스웨덴무역투자대표부와 중국 BYD 등 해외 홍보관을 방문해 글로벌 네트워킹을 확대하고, 포항시의 투자 및 산업 환경을 홍보했다.

이강덕 시장은 “이차전지 산업은 더 큰 도약을 위한 성장통을 겪고 있으며, 이 시점에서 정부의 적극적인 지원이 절실하다”고 언급하며, “이차전지 정책의 방향타 역할을 하는 전문가들의 의견을 반영해 포항의 대들보 산업인 이차전지 산업을 육성하는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 포항시는 경북도와 함께 오는 9월 기초지자체 최초로 컨퍼런스, 박람회, 취업설명회 등을 포함한 ‘포항 배터리 엑스포’를 개최할 예정이다. 이를 통해 배터리 선도도시로서의 입지를 더욱 강화해 나갈 계획이다.
