이를 위해 7일, 이차전지 종합관리센터에서 이강덕 포항시장, 김완섭 환경부 장관, 김학홍 경북도 행정부지사 등이 참석한 가운데 배터리 순환이용 체계 구축을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다.

이번 협약을 통해 포항시, 환경부, 경북도는 배터리 순환이용 산업을 국가 핵심 녹색산업으로 육성하고, 배터리 재생원료 시장 활성화와 핵심광물 공급망 안정화를 위해 상호협력을 강화할 예정이다. 특히, 최근 보급이 급증하고 있는 리튬인산철(LFP) 배터리의 재활용 기술개발을 위한 협력체계를 구축해, 재활용이 어려운 배터리의 처리를 위한 기술 개발을 추진한다.

협약 후에는 포항시 배터리 재활용 관련 지역 기업들과 간담회를 개최해 현장의 애로사항을 청취하고, 협력 방안을 논의했다. 기업들은 사용 후 배터리 산업 활성화를 위한 정부의 제도 마련과 규제 완화를 요청하며, 지속적인 관심을 당부했다.

김완섭 장관은 “사용후 배터리 재활용은 탄소중립과 지속 가능한 경제성장을 위한 핵심 전략 산업”이라며, “지자체와 기업과 지속적으로 소통하고, 글로벌 배터리 순환이용 산업을 선도할 수 있도록 다각도로 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이어 김 장관과 이 시장 등은 6월에 준공 예정인 블루밸리 국가산단의 배터리 자원순환 클러스터를 현장 방문해 추진 상황을 점검할 예정이다. 이 클러스터는 배터리 산업의 글로벌 규제 대응과 원자재 공급망 안정화를 목표로, 연구 지원단지와 기업 집적단지를 조성해 전기차 배터리 자원순환 계획 수립 및 기술개발 지원 등을 수행할 예정이다.

이강덕 시장은 “포항은 배터리 리사이클링 규제특구를 시작으로 사용후 배터리 순환이용 산업 기반을 선도적으로 조성해왔다”며, “LFP 배터리 재활용 기술개발에 환경부와 경북도와 함께 적극 협력할 것”이라고 강조했다.

한편, 이날 이 시장은 김완섭 장관과의 오찬 간담회에서 포항이 배터리 순환이용의 전초기지로 도약하는 현황을 설명하며, 녹색산업 성장기지로 육성하기 위한 국가 차원의 인프라 지원을 건의했다.
