【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국수력원자력(한수원)이 10일 서울 한수원 방사선보건원에서 한국전력국제원자력대학원대학교(KINGS)와 ‘산학협력단 출연사업 업무협약’을 체결했다.

이번 협약은 원전 수출을 둘러싼 국제 경쟁이 심화되는 가운데, 양 기관이 대한민국 원전 수출을 원활하게 추진하기 위한 전문 연구조직의 필요성에 공감하고, KINGS 산학협력단 출연사업을 통해 ‘KINGS 핵비확산협력센터’의 연구·개발 역량을 강화하기 위한 협력을 다지기 위한 것이다.

‘KINGS 핵비확산협력센터’는 앞으로 미국 핵안보청 및 주요 정책연구소들과 유기적인 협력 체계를 구축하고, 이를 통해 수출통제, 외교, 안보 등과 관련된 이슈를 선제적으로 발굴하며 해결 방안을 모색할 예정이다. 또한, 최적의 원전 수출 지원 정책을 개발하는 데 주력할 방침이다.

한편, 인공지능(AI) 대전환 시대를 맞아, 미국을 비롯한 주요 선진국들은 안정적이고 경제적이며 무탄소인 핵에너지를 핵심 에너지원으로 주목하고 있다. 이에 따라, 데이터센터를 운영하는 미국의 빅테크 기업들은 전력구매계약(PPA)을 통해 원전을 보유한 전력회사들과 협력을 강화하고, 차세대 소형모듈원자로(SMR) 기술에 대한 투자도 활발히 진행 중이다.

한수원과 KINGS는 이러한 글로벌 에너지 및 산업 메가트렌드를 대한민국 원전 수출 확대를 위한 전략적 기회로 활용하기 위해 미국과의 긴밀한 소통 및 협력 체계 구축의 중요성에 대해 인식을 함께하고 있다.
