20일 울진군에 따르면 망양정은 원래 고려 시대 기성면 망양리 해변 언덕에 세워졌으나, 여러 차례 이건과 중수를 거쳐 1860년(철종 11)에 현재의 위치인 근남면 산포리 둔산동으로 옮겨졌고, 1959년에 중건, 1994년에 재보수되었다. 

현재 망양정은 울진군의 대표 하천인 왕피천과 동해의 만경창파를 한눈에 바라볼 수 있는 명소로, 숙종이 “관동제일루”라는 친필의 편액을 하사한 곳으로 유명하다. 또한, 숙종과 정조의 어제시, 정추의 망양정시, 정철의 관동별곡초 등 많은 문학작품이 이곳과 관련이 있다.

울진군은 지난해에도 관동팔경의 다른 명소인 월송정(평해읍)과 망양정 옛터정자(기성면)에 대한 보수 공사를 진행해, 관람객들이 더 안전하고 쾌적한 환경에서 자연을 감상할 수 있도록 개선했다. 특히 월송정에는 앉을 수 있는 공간을 조성해 관람객들이 난간에 앉는 위험 상황을 방지했다.

손병복 울진군수는 “망양정과 같은 주요 전통정자들의 지속적인 유지보수를 통해, 관람객들이 역사문화 공간과 천혜의 자연을 생생하게 경험할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

Uljin Mangyangjeong Restoration Project to be Pushed Forward

Uljin County (Governor Son Byeong-bok) plans to push forward with restoration work on Mangyangjeong, one of the eight scenic views of Gwandong, in the second half of this year. According to Uljin County on the 20th, Mangyangjeong was originally built on a hill on the beach of Mangyang-ri, Giseong-myeon during the Goryeo Dynasty, but after several relocations and renovations, it was moved to its current location in Dunsan-dong, Sanpo-ri, Geunnam-myeon in 1860 (the 11th year of King Cheoljong’s reign). Last year, Uljin-gun also carried out repair work on Wolsongjeong (Pyeonghae-eup) and Mangyangjeong Old Site Pavilion (Giseong-myeon), other famous places in Gwandong Palgyeong, to improve the environment so that visitors can enjoy nature in a safer and more comfortable environment. In particular, a sitting space was created at Wolsongjeong to prevent visitors from sitting on the railing.

Uljin-gun Mayor Son Byeong-bok said, “We will continue to maintain major traditional pavilions such as Mangyangjeong so that visitors can vividly experience historical and cultural spaces and the natural beauty of nature.”
