 17일 오후, 한덕수 대통령 권한대행 국무총리가 정부서울청사에서 ‘APEC 정상회의 제6차 준비위원회’를 진행했다.

이 자리에서 이철우 도지사는 APEC 정상회의를 계기로 한반도 평화 구상과 글로벌 경제 협력을 결합한 초대형 국가 프로젝트를 전격 제안했다.

그가 밝힌 ‘2025 APEC 특별 프로젝트 : 한반도 평화 기반 조성과 남⋅북⋅미 DMZ 공동개발’은 국제 외교사에서 전례 없는 구상이다. 

이 도지사는 2025년 APEC 정상회의에 도널드 트럼프 전 미국 대통령, 시진핑 중국 국가주석, 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령, 이시바 일본 총리와 더불어 김정은 북한 국무위원장을 공식 초청하여, 한반도 평화를 위한 국제 공조의 장을 만들겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.

나아가 그는 DMZ를 남·북·미가 공동 개발하는 평화경제특구로 전환하겠다는 비전을 제ㅅ했다. 군사적 대치의 상징이었던 비무장비대를, 관광·문화·경제가 어우러진‘세계인의 복합 평화지대’로 실질적 개발에 착수하겠다는 것이다.

이철우 도지사는 “DMZ는 더 이상 긴장의 장소가 되어선 안 되며, 평화와 번영의 이정표가 돼야 한다”면서 “이번 APEC 프로젝트는 말이 아닌 실천으로, 대한민국이 글로벌 중추 국가로 도약하는 전환점이 될 것”이라고 강조했다.

아울러 “대한민국은 과거 박정희 대통령 시절 한강의 기적을 이룬 나라다. 이제 그 정신을 계승해 세계사의 전환점을 만들어야 할 때”라며 “이번 프로젝트는 단순한 외교·안보 구상을 넘어, 미래세대를 위한 경제와 평화의 비전”이라고 말했다.

He also said, “South Korea is a country that achieved the Miracle on the Han River during the Park Chung-hee administration. Now is the time to inherit that spirit and create a turning point in world history,” and “This project is a vision of economy and peace for future generations, beyond a simple diplomatic and security plan.”
