올해 주제는 “춤추는 탈, 다양한 얼굴을 찾아서”로, 탈춤이 가진 해학과 풍자의 정신을 현대적으로 재해석해 세대와 국가, 문화를 아우르는 소통의 장을 지향한다.

개막은 원도심 거리에서 열리는 퍼레이드와 개막 공연으로 화려하게 시작된다. 이어 탈춤공원과 원도심 무대에서는 27개국 60개 해외 공연단과 140여 개 국내 공연단이 참여해 전통 탈춤과 민속공연을 선보인다.

특히 올해 주빈국인 이탈리아 공연단이 초청 무대를 꾸미며, 베네치아 가면과 하회탈 공동 전시, 이탈리아 장인 초청 체험 프로그램이 마련돼 관람객들에게 특별한 경험을 제공할 예정이다.

또한 유네스코·시·도 지정 문화유산 공연단 17개 팀의 무대와 창작 탈춤 경연, 대학생 탈춤공연단의 참여는 전통과 현대, 세대 간 교류의 장을 열어줄 것으로 기대된다. 아울러 세계탈춤그리기대회, 1318 청소년마당, 자유참가 공연 등 시민과 관람객이 직접 참여할 수 있는 프로그램도 다채롭게 준비됐다.
