【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시가 글로벌 마이스(MICE) 산업 경쟁력 확보를 위해 유럽 주요 국제기구와 컨벤션 기관을 잇달아 방문하며 협력 네트워크 확장에 나섰다.

시는 지난 3일 유엔산업개발기구(UNIDO), 세계철강협회(WSA) 등 국제기구를 방문한 데 이어, 4일부터 7일까지 오스트리아 비엔나와 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 현장 중심의 MICE 협력 논의를 진행했다고 10일 밝혔다.

포항시 대표단은 2027년 개관 예정인 포항국제전시컨벤션센터(POEX)의 비전과 경쟁력을 설명하고, 국제회의 유치 전략과 지속가능한 운영 모델을 공유하며 협력 가능성을 타진했다.

오스트리아 비엔나컨벤션센터(Viecon)에서는 수자네 챈트너 지속가능성 책임자, 게랄드 슈타이노흐 사업개발 책임자와 만나 유럽 최고 수준의 컨벤션 운영 경험과 지속가능 경영 사례를 청취했다. 비엔나컨벤션센터는 운영 효율성과 친환경 시스템을 동시에 갖춘 대표적 성공 모델로 평가받고 있다.

브뤼셀에서는 복합 컨벤션시설 ‘더 스퀘어(The Square Brussels Convention Centre)’를 찾아 시설 운영 및 MICE 인프라 구축 사례를 살폈다. 1960년대 개관한 브뤼셀 컨벤션센터를 리모델링해 재탄생한 더 스퀘어는 예술성과 기능성을 결합한 도시형 MICE 랜드마크로 꼽힌다.

이어 시 대표단은 브뤼셀 공식 관광·MICE 통합기구인 ‘비지트 브뤼셀(Visit Brussels)’을 방문해 국제회의 유치 전략, 도시 마케팅, 공공·민간 협력 모델 등을 공유했다. 엘리자베스 잉겔젬 이사는 “포항국제전시컨벤션센터는 산업 기반 도시의 브랜드 가치를 강화하는 중요한 계기가 될 것”이라며 글로벌 네트워크 확장에 협력 의사를 밝혔다.

또한 대표단은 KOTRA 브뤼셀 무역관과도 면담을 갖고 유럽 현지와의 네트워크 구축 방안을 논의했다. 임태형 관장은 “포항의 산·학·연 강점을 활용할 수 있는 전시·컨퍼런스 정보를 적극 공유하고, POEX 홍보에도 협조하겠다”고 말했다.

포항시는 이번 방문을 통해 도시 산업 구조와 연계된 MICE 산업 전략의 필요성을 재확인하고, 지속가능한 글로벌 협력체계 구축을 위한 구체적인 방향을 마련했다고 평가했다.

이상현 관광컨벤션도시추진본부장은 “포항 MICE 산업의 미래를 직접 보고 설계한 뜻깊은 일정이었다”며 “POEX 개관 이후에도 세계 주요 기관과의 협력을 강화해 포항의 글로벌 경쟁력을 높이겠다”고 말했다.

The Square, a renovated version of the Brussels Convention Center, which opened in the 1960s, is considered an urban MICE landmark that combines artistry and functionality.

Following this, the city delegation visited Visit Brussels, Brussels' official tourism and MICE integration organization, to share strategies for attracting international conferences, city marketing, and public-private partnership models. Director Elisabeth Ingelgem stated, "The Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center will be a significant opportunity to strengthen the brand value of this industrial city," expressing their willingness to cooperate in expanding the city's global network.

The delegation also met with the KOTRA Brussels office to discuss ways to build a network with local European partners. Director Lim Tae-hyung stated, "We will actively share exhibition and conference information that leverages Pohang's industry, academia, and research strengths, and cooperate in promoting POEX."

Pohang City assessed that this visit reaffirmed the need for a MICE industry strategy linked to the city's industrial structure and established specific directions for building a sustainable global cooperation system.

Lee Sang-hyun, Head of the Tourism and Convention City Promotion Headquarters, stated, "This was a meaningful visit, as we directly observed and designed the future of Pohang's MICE industry." He added, "Even after the opening of POEX, we will strengthen cooperation with major global organizations to enhance Pohang's global competitiveness."
