【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시가 농림축산식품부가 추진하는 ‘그린바이오산업 육성지구’ 공모에 최종 선정됐다. 지난해 ‘바이오특화단지 지정’에 이어 또 한 번 호재가 이어지며 포항의 바이오 산업 육성 전략이 본격적인 성과를 내고 있다는 평가다.

이번에 지정된 육성지구는 남구 지곡 R&D밸리 일대 포항강소연구개발특구와 북구 흥해읍 이인리의 포항융합기술산업지구가 포함된다.

포항시는 그간 포스텍, 한동대학교 등을 비롯해 그린백신실증지원센터, 지역 유망 그린바이오 기업들과의 협력 체계를 구축하며 공모 대응에 힘을 기울여왔다.

이번 지정으로 포항은 앞으로 ▲국비 기반 인프라 공모사업 참여 자격 확보 ▲육성지구 입주 기업 평가 시 가점 부여 ▲전략시설 중심 공모 우선지원 등 다양한 혜택을 받게 된다. 시는 이를 바탕으로 신성장산업인 그린바이오 분야 연구개발·기업지원 정책을 강화해 대표 도시로 도약하겠다는 계획을 밝혔다.

현재 포항에는 ▲그린바이오 벤처 캠퍼스 ▲그린백신실증지원센터 ▲신약 후보물질 발굴을 위한 첨단 분석 플랫폼 ▲백신 원료 대량생산 인프라 등 국내 최대 규모의 그린바이오 산업 기반시설이 연계 구축되고 있다.

시는 이러한 기반을 토대로 산·학·연 협업 모델을 강화해 전주기 산업 생태계를 완성하고, 국가지정 바이오산업 육성 대상 도시로서 영향력을 확대한다는 전략이다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “그린바이오 산업이 포항의 미래 먹거리이자 성장 동력이 될 것”이라며 “지역 기업 성장을 적극 지원하고 일자리를 확산해 포항이 K-동물용의약품 산업의 중심지로 도약할 수 있도록 전폭적 행정지원을 이어가겠다”고 밝혔다.

올해 공모에는 전국 11개 광역지자체가 참여했으며, 최종 7곳이 육성지구로 지정됐다. 경북도는 포항(동물용의약품), 상주·예천(곤충), 안동·상주·의성(천연물)을 연계해 국가 차원의 그린바이오 클러스터 조성을 목표로 참여했다.

특히 포항은 국내 유일·최대 규모 식물백신 연구·생산 인프라와 기술집약형 기업 생태계가 높은 평가를 받아 향후 국가 동물용의약품 산업의 거점 도시로 성장할 가능성이 가장 높은 지역으로 꼽히고 있다.

Pohang City has been selected for the 'Green Bio Industry Promotion Zone' competition, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Following last year's designation as a 'Bio-Specialized Complex,' this positive development marks the beginning of the city's bio industry promotion strategy.

The newly designated promotion zones include the Pohang Gangseo R&D Special Zone in the Jigok R&D Valley area in Nam-gu and the Pohang Convergence Technology Industrial Zone in Iin-ri, Heunghae-eup, Buk-gu.

Pohang City has been actively preparing for the competition by establishing a cooperative system with POSTECH, Handong Global University, the Green Vaccine Validation Support Center, and promising local green bio companies.

With this designation, Pohang will enjoy various benefits, including securing eligibility for nationally funded infrastructure competitions, receiving additional points in the evaluation of companies located in the promotion zone, and receiving priority support for competitions focused on strategic facilities. Building on this foundation, the city announced plans to strengthen its R&D and corporate support policies in the green biotechnology sector, a new growth industry, and leap forward as a leading city.

Currently, Pohang is building the nation's largest green biotechnology industry infrastructure, including a green biotechnology venture campus, a green vaccine validation support center, a cutting-edge analysis platform for the discovery of new drug candidates, and infrastructure for mass production of vaccine raw materials.

Building on this foundation, the city aims to strengthen its industry-academia-research collaboration model to complete a full-cycle industrial ecosystem and expand its influence as a nationally designated biotechnology industry development city.

Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "The green biotechnology industry will be Pohang's future growth engine and driver of growth. We will continue to provide full administrative support to actively support the growth of local companies and create jobs, enabling Pohang to become a hub for the K-veterinary pharmaceutical industry."

Eleven local governments across the country participated in this year's competition, and seven were ultimately designated as development zones. Gyeongbuk Province participated with the goal of establishing a national green bio cluster by linking Pohang (veterinary medicine), Sangju and Yecheon (insects), and Andong, Sangju, and Uiseong (natural products).

Pohang, in particular, is highly regarded for its unique and largest plant vaccine research and production infrastructure in Korea and its technology-intensive corporate ecosystem, making it the region with the highest potential to grow into a hub for the national veterinary medicine industry.
