포항시는 이강덕 시장이 지난달 28일 헝가리 데브레첸에서 열린 에코프로 양극재 공장 준공식에 참석해 한국과 헝가리 간 배터리 산업 협력 기반을 강화했다고 1일 밝혔다.

에코프로 헝가리 공장은 국내 양극재 기업으로서는 처음으로 유럽 현지 생산 시설을 확보했다는 점에서 의미가 크다. 특히 이번 준공은 포항에서 구축된 이차전지 산업 생태계가 글로벌 시장으로 확장되는 중요한 전환점으로 평가된다.

준공식에는 이 시장을 비롯해 이동채 에코프로 회장, 송호준 대표 등 에코프로 경영진과 레벤트 머저르 헝가리 외교무역부 차관, 이슈트반 주 투자진흥청장, 라슬로 파프 데브레첸 시장 등 양국 주요 인사들이 참석했다.

에코프로는 2017년 포항 영일만산업단지에 포항캠퍼스를 설립한 이래 배터리 양극재 생산부터 리사이클링까지 연계하는 밸류체인을 구축해왔다. 이번 헝가리 공장은 포항에서 완성된 생산 모델이 유럽 현장에 적용된 첫 사례로, 포항의 배터리 산업 경쟁력이 글로벌 산업 표준에 한 발 더 다가섰다는 평가다.

이강덕 시장은 전날 열린 전야제 축사에서 “포항은 에코프로 혁신이 가장 성공적으로 구현된 도시이며, 헝가리는 유럽 진출 거점이 될 것”이라며 “양국의 산업·경제 협력이 더욱 강화되도록 포항시가 든든한 동반자가 되겠다”고 밝혔다.

또한 준공식 축사에서는 “포항의 경험과 노하우가 헝가리에서도 이어져 글로벌 이차전지 시장을 선도하는 핵심 거점으로 자리하길 기대한다”고 말했다.

포항시는 이번 방문 기간 동안 헝가리 외교무역부와 투자진흥청, 글로벌 배터리 기업 관계자들과 연쇄 면담을 진행했다. 이 자리에서 포항의 산업 클러스터 경쟁력, 산학연 기반, 기업 지원 정책 등을 소개하며 협력 방안 확대를 논의했다.

포항시는 이번 에코프로 헝가리 공장 준공을 계기로 유럽 이차전지 산업 단체 및 기업과 교류를 강화하고, 지역 기업의 글로벌 시장 진출을 지원하는 데 속도를 낼 방침이다.

시 관계자는 “포항은 국내 배터리 산업 중심지에서 글로벌 K-배터리 허브로 도약하고 있다”며 “이번 방문을 계기로 해외 네트워크 확장과 투자 파트너십 발굴을 지속해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

Pohang City announced on the 1st that Mayor Lee Kang-deok attended the completion ceremony for the Ecopro cathode materials plant in Debrecen, Hungary, on the 28th of last month, strengthening the foundation for battery industry cooperation between Korea and Hungary.

The Ecopro Hungarian plant is significant as it marks the first time a Korean cathode materials company has secured a local production facility in Europe. This completion is considered a significant turning point for the Pohang-based secondary battery industry ecosystem, expanding into the global market.

The ceremony was attended by key figures from both countries, including Mayor Lee, Ecopro Chairman Lee Dong-chae, CEO Song Ho-jun, and other Ecopro executives. Since establishing its Pohang Campus in the Yeongilman Industrial Complex in Pohang in 2017, EcoPro has been building a value chain encompassing battery cathode material production and recycling. This Hungarian plant marks the first time that the production model developed in Pohang has been applied to a European site, marking a significant step forward in Pohang's battery industry competitiveness in meeting global industry standards.

In his congratulatory address at the eve of the ceremony held the previous day, Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "Pohang is the city where EcoPro's innovations have most successfully been implemented, and Hungary will serve as a base for expansion into Europe. Pohang will be a strong partner to further strengthen industrial and economic cooperation between our two countries."

In his congratulatory address at the completion ceremony, he added, "We hope that Pohang's experience and expertise will be shared in Hungary, establishing it as a key hub for leading the global secondary battery market."

During this visit, Pohang City held a series of meetings with representatives from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency, and global battery companies. At this meeting, Pohang's industrial cluster competitiveness, industry-academia-research foundation, and corporate support policies were introduced and cooperation plans were discussed.

Pohang City plans to capitalize on the completion of the EcoPro Hungary plant by strengthening exchanges with European secondary battery industry organizations and companies and accelerating support for local companies' entry into the global market.

A city official stated, "Pohang is making a leap forward from a domestic battery industry hub to a global K-battery hub. This visit will serve as an opportunity to continue expanding our overseas network and exploring investment partnerships."
