스마트 과수원 특화단지 조성사업은 기후변화에 대응하고 과수산업 경쟁력을 강화하기 위해 신품종 전환, 무인화·스마트 장비, 재해예방시설, 공동장비 등을 집중 지원하는 국가 공모 사업이다.

이번 선정은 지난해 ‘죽장면 상옥마을’이 선정돼 27억 원을 확보한 데 이어 2년 연속 거둔 성과로, 지역 사과 산업의 체질 개선과 생산 기반의 스마트화가 한층 가속화될 것으로 기대된다.

포항시는 이번 사업을 통해 2026년부터 2028년까지 3년간 총 51억 원을 확보해 오덕·탑정마을 21.7ha 규모에 품종전환, ICT·무인화 장비 도입, 재해예방시설 구축, 교육·컨설팅 등 스마트 과수원 인프라를 체계적으로 구축할 계획이다.

특히 포항시 사과 재배면적의 89%가 만생종이며, 그중 후지 계열이 87%를 차지하는 현 구조를 고려할 때, 이지플·썸머프린스·골든볼·후브락스 등 다양한 신품종의 대규모 도입은 품종 다변화와 기후 탄력성 확보에 기여할 것으로 전망된다.

또한 우박·저온 등 기상재해에 대비한 예방시설이 함께 설치됨에 따라 안정적인 생산 기반 마련과 가격 변동성 완화에도 긍정적 효과가 기대된다.

이현주 포항시 농업기술센터 소장은 “이번 국비사업 선정으로 고품질 신품종 사과 생산 기반을 갖추게 됐다”며 “소비자 요구 변화에 부합하는 품종 전환과 스마트 농업 기술 도입을 통해 농가 소득 증대와 지역 과수산업 경쟁력 강화를 적극 뒷받침하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Odeok and Tapjeong Villages in Gibuk-myeon, Buk-gu, Pohang City have been selected for the "2026 Smart Orchard Specialized Complex Development Project," hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Smart Orchard Specialized Complex Development Project is a nationally competitive program focused on supporting new varieties, unmanned and smart equipment, disaster prevention facilities, and shared equipment to address climate change and enhance the competitiveness of the fruit industry.

This selection marks the second consecutive year, following the successful selection of Sangok Village in Jukjang-myeon last year, which secured KRW 2.7 billion in funding. It is expected to further accelerate the transformation of the local apple industry and the smartization of its production base.

Through this project, Pohang City plans to secure a total of KRW 5.1 billion over three years, from 2026 to 2028. This will systematically establish a smart orchard infrastructure, including variety conversion, the introduction of ICT and unmanned equipment, disaster prevention facilities, and training and consulting, covering 21.7 hectares in Odeok and Tapjeong villages.

Considering the current structure, where late-maturing varieties account for 89% of Pohang's apple cultivation area, and Fuji varieties account for 87% of that total, the large-scale introduction of new varieties, such as Easy Plus, Summer Prince, Golden Ball, and Hublax, is expected to contribute to variety diversification and climate resilience.

Furthermore, the installation of preventive facilities to protect against weather disasters such as hail and low temperatures is expected to positively impact the establishment of a stable production base and mitigate price volatility.

Lee Hyeon-ju, director of the Pohang City Agricultural Technology Center, said, “With this national project selection, we have established a foundation for producing high-quality new apple varieties.” He added, “We will actively support increasing farm income and strengthening the competitiveness of the local fruit industry by introducing smart agricultural technologies and converting varieties to meet changing consumer demands.”
