특히 관광 분야와 관련해 신 시장은 “문경새재 방문객 수가 10년 전 400만 명을 기록한 이후 감소세를 보이다가, 지난해 다시 400만 명대를 회복하며 증가 추세로 돌아섰다”며 “4대 축제를 비롯한 각종 행사, 적극적인 홍보와 친절운동이 어우러진 결과로, 향후 관광객 1천만 명 시대도 충분히 가능하다”고 밝혔다.
고령화 사회 대응을 위해 새해에는 어르신 목욕비 지원을 확대하고 읍·면·동 희망택시 운행을 늘려 복지 사각지대 없는 행정을 추진할 방침이다. 아울러 경로당을 직접 방문해 지역 어르신들의 의견을 청취하고 생활 속 불편 사항을 세심히 살필 것을 당부했다.
