이번 사업은 왕피천공원 내 물놀이 시설 확충을 요구해 온 주민들의 지속적인 의견을 반영한 것으로, 기존 바닥분수가 시설 노후화로 안전사고 우려와 수질 관리 문제를 안고 있다는 지적에 따라 추진됐다.

울진군은 총사업비 27억 원을 투입해 기존 바닥분수 시설을 전면 철거하고, 수질 정화 시스템을 갖춘 유수형 수경시설과 휴식 공간을 함께 조성할 계획이다. 이를 통해 어린이들이 안심하고 물놀이를 즐길 수 있는 환경을 마련하는 한편, 성인들에게는 여유로운 휴식을 제공하는 복합 힐링 공간으로 탈바꿈시킨다는 방침이다. 사업은 오는 4월 준공을 목표로 진행되고 있다.

이번 물놀이 쉼터 조성은 왕피천공원 전반의 변화를 알리는 첫 단계로, 울진군은 이를 발판으로 2026년 상반기에 예정된 공원 전체 리노베이션 사업을 차질 없이 추진해 공원의 경쟁력을 한층 강화할 계획이다.

울진군 관계자는 “왕피천공원이 군민에게는 일상 속 힐링 공간이 되고, 관광객에게는 다시 찾고 싶은 매력적인 휴식처가 되길 기대한다”며 “앞으로도 삶의 질 향상과 지역 관광 활성화를 동시에 이끌 수 있는 차별화된 공원 인프라 조성에 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
