김 전 의원은 장 대표를 만난 자리에서 “목숨을 건 단식을 이어가는 모습을 보며 당과 정치에 대한 대표님의 결기와 각오가 고스란히 느껴졌다”며 “말이 아닌 행동으로 책임을 지려는 선택 앞에서 숙연해질 수밖에 없었다”고 말했다. 이어 “초췌해진 얼굴을 직접 보니 마음이 울컥했고, 무엇보다 건강이 크게 걱정된다”며 안타까움을 드러냈다.

그러면서 민주당을 향해 “특검을 조속히 수용해 야당 대표가 단식이라는 극단적인 선택으로 더 이상 건강을 해치는 일이 없도록 해야 한다”고 촉구했다. 김 전 의원은 “정치적 대립이 이어지더라도 사람의 건강과 생명 위에 있을 수는 없다”며 “경색된 정국이 하루빨리 풀려 장 대표가 다시 건강한 모습으로 국정과 당을 이끌어주기를 바란다”고 강조했다.

한편, 장동혁 국민의힘 대표는 특검법 처리 등을 둘러싼 정치 현안에 항의하며 국회 본청 앞 천막 농성장에서 엿새째 단식을 이어가고 있다.

장 대표는 2022년 김태흠 충남지사의 충남도지사 출마로 공석이 된 보령·서천 지역구에서 공천을 받아 당선되며 21대 국회에 뒤늦게 입성했다. 당시 같은 초선 의원이었던 김병욱 전 의원과는 의정 활동 과정에서 비교적 긴밀한 관계를 유지해 온 것으로 알려져 있다.

Meanwhile, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk has been on a hunger strike for six days in a tent protest in front of the National Assembly building, protesting political issues surrounding the Special Prosecutor's Act and other related issues.

Representative Jang entered the 21st National Assembly late in his term, winning the nomination in the Boryeong-Seocheon district, a seat vacated by South Chungcheong Province Governor Kim Tae-heum's 2022 bid for governor.
