Kumoh National Institute of Technology Research Team Develops High-Performance Catalytic Filter to Remove Formaldehyde at Room Temperature

Researchers at the National Institute of Technology have developed a high-performance catalytic filter technology capable of effectively removing formaldehyde, a harmful substance found in indoor air, at room temperature.

The National Institute of Technology (President Kim Sang-ho) announced that a research team led by Professor Kim Tae-oh of the Department of Environmental Engineering, School of Civil, Engineering and Environmental Engineering, has developed a catalytic filter technology capable of removing formaldehyde from indoor air at room temperature.

Formaldehyde is a representative indoor air pollutant emitted from building materials, furniture, and adhesives, and is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In particular, its concentration rises easily in indoor environments with limited ventilation, and it is identified as a major cause of sick building syndrome; consequently, the development of technology to effectively remove it has been raised as a critical environmental issue.

The research team developed a new catalytic filter structure utilizing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to allow manganese oxide (MnO₂) catalysts to grow directly on a fiber filter. PVA was found to improve the structural stability of the catalyst by acting as a reducing agent that induces MnO₂ formation, while simultaneously serving as a binder that enhances adhesion between the catalyst and the fiber substrate.

Experimental results showed that the catalyst filter demonstrated a formaldehyde removal rate of over 97% and a high carbon dioxide conversion rate, and was confirmed to maintain stable performance even under conditions of repeated use and long-term continuous operation. Furthermore, it was revealed that oxygen defects on the catalyst surface and surface-adsorbed oxygen species facilitate the rapid conversion of reaction intermediates, enabling efficient catalytic oxidation reactions even at room temperature.

Professor Kim Tae-oh stated, "The catalyst filter developed in this study has the potential to expand into an air purification technology applicable to various indoor environments by being applied to air purifiers or ventilation systems." He added, "The achievements of student Park Ye-ji, who conducted this research, demonstrate the potential for developing next-generation catalyst-based air purification materials."

Researcher Park Ye-ji (Master's degree in Environmental Engineering), the first author of this study, played a key role in the research by participating in catalyst synthesis, performance evaluation experiments, and the analysis of the catalytic reaction mechanism. She was selected as a 2024 Presidential Science Scholar for Graduate Students. The research results have been published online in the Journal of Hazardous Materials (top 4% JCR, IF 11.3), an international academic journal in the field of environmental and chemical engineering, and are scheduled to be included in the print edition in the upcoming April issue. This research was conducted with support from the Korea Institute of Mechanical Engineering's Basic Project and Gyeongsangbuk-do's RISE Project.
