경주시는 한국관광데이터랩 통계를 분석한 결과, 2026년 1분기 외국인 방문객 수가 24만4,739명으로 집계돼 전년 동기 22만7,108명보다 7.8% 증가했다고 16일 밝혔다.

월별로는 1월 방문객이 6만5,687명으로 전년 같은 기간보다 4.3% 늘었고, 2월은 6만7,822명으로 20.5% 증가했다. 3월 역시 11만1,230명으로 전년 대비 3.1% 늘어 전반적으로 안정적인 성장세를 이어갔다. 특히 관광 비수기로 꼽히는 2월 증가 폭이 두드러지며 전체 상승세를 견인했다.

국가별로는 중국 관광객이 약 4만6,000여 명으로 전체의 19%를 차지하며 증가세를 주도했다. 이어 러시아 5.1%, 인도네시아 4.8%, 미국 3% 등으로 나타나 관광객 유입 국가가 다변화되는 흐름도 확인됐다.

최근 동부사적지와 황룡사지 일대에는 중동과 동남아시아, 유럽권 관광객까지 다양한 국적의 외국인 방문객이 눈에 띄게 늘고 있다. 유적지 주변에서는 단체 관광객뿐 아니라 개별 여행객도 증가하면서 사진 촬영과 산책을 즐기는 체류형 관광 형태가 확산되는 모습이다.

히잡을 착용한 중동권 관광객과 서양권 개별 관광객이 함께 어우러진 풍경은 과거 동북아 중심 관광객 구성과는 다른 변화된 경주의 관광 지형을 보여준다는 평가다.

Choi Hyeok-jun, Acting Mayor of Gyeongju, stated, “With the increase in foreign tourists, the diversification of the tourism market is gaining momentum,” adding, “We will further strengthen the foundation for stay-type tourism by discovering content that reflects the characteristics of each nationality and improving tourism infrastructure.”
