North Gyeongsang Province Pushes for Expansion of ‘Special Forest Management Zones’ in Wildfire-Damaged Areas… Revitalizing Local Economy Beyond Restoration

North Gyeongsang Province has officially begun expanding the designation of ‘Special Forest Management Zones’ to restore forests damaged by massive wildfires and revitalize the local economy.

North Gyeongsang Province announced that it held a kick-off meeting for the ‘Consulting Service for the Designation and Operation Support of Special Forest Management Zones’ on the 23rd at the Hoguk Room of the Provincial Office, targeting five cities and counties affected by the wildfires: Andong-si, Uiseong-gun, Cheongsong-gun, Yeongyang-gun, and Yeongdeok-gun.

This project will be carried out over 10 months with an investment of 300 million won in provincial funds. Its goal is to establish a forest management model that links income generation with the tourism industry, moving beyond simple restoration centered on logging and reforestation.

Approximately 30 people attended the meeting, including officials from provincial and city/county forestry departments, forestry cooperatives, and central government ministries, to discuss the direction of the project and implementation plans. In particular, opinions were gathered regarding future long-term management plans and directions for creating region-specific forest resources, focusing on education and technical support measures aimed at fostering "professional management entities."

The Korea Forest Owners Federation, the agency commissioned to carry out the project, plans to identify customized specialized models that consider the geographical characteristics and tree species of the affected areas, and to concretize spatial utilization plans through site surveys and analyses.

In addition, it will form an on-site advisory group to suggest suitable tree species for afforestation based on soil analysis, and will conduct training for collaborative management organizations on linking secondary industries such as afforestation for income-generating and landscape species and cultivation of forest products, as well as tertiary industries such as mountain village experience tourism and forest recreation facilities.

Attendees also proposed measures to secure additional income sources, such as trading carbon absorption performance through the registration of external projects under the Carbon Emission Trading System and utilizing the Eco-friendly Agriculture Direct Payment System. Following the designation of the area around Dongbyeon-ri, Jeomgok-myeon, Uiseong-gun as the "No. 1 Special Forest Management Zone" last March, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to accelerate the designation of additional special zones through this commissioned study. Furthermore, the province intends to finalize specific business plans by reflecting the opinions of forest owners and experts, and to work with central government ministries to secure state funding.

Choi Soon-go, Director General of the Forest Resources Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "Forests are a core regional asset and a precious resource to be passed down to future generations," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure the successful establishment of Special Forest Management Zones, leading to increased income for foresters and the revitalization of the local economy."
