Gyeongbuk Agricultural Products Quality Management Service Conducts Intensive Crackdown on Country of Origin and Reused Wreath Labeling for Flowers Ahead of Family Month

The Gyeongbuk Branch of the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (hereinafter Gyeongbuk AQMS) is launching a crackdown on country of origin labeling in preparation for increased consumption of flowers during Family Month in May.

The Gyeongbuk AQMS announced that from May 4 to 19, it will conduct an intensive crackdown on country of origin labeling and the labeling of reused wreaths to establish fair trade practices for flowers, such as carnations and chrysanthemums.

With the recent trend of increasing imports of major flowers, including carnations and chrysanthemums, the possibility of foreign flowers being sold disguised as domestic products is rising around Parents' Day and Teachers' Day. Accordingly, the Gyeongbuk AQMS plans to focus its inspections on the status of country of origin labeling, centering on retailers of cut flowers such as carnations, chrysanthemums, and roses.

In addition, considering the period when demand for wreaths increases due to the wedding season, the agency will also conduct parallel inspections on compliance with the reused wreath labeling system. For wreaths made from reused fresh flowers, it is mandatory to clearly indicate whether the flowers have been reused.

Items subject to country of origin labeling include 11 types of domestic cut flowers—chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, lilies, gladiolus, tulips, gerberas, irises, freesias, calla lilies, and baby's breath—along with all imported and distributed foreign floricultural products.

To enhance the effectiveness of enforcement, monitoring of online sales utilizing cyber enforcement teams will also be strengthened. The Gyeongbuk Agricultural Products Quality Management Service plans to select mail-order retailers suspected of violations and conduct inspections using both online and offline methods.

Penalties for violations are also strict. False labeling of the country of origin is punishable by imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine of up to 100 million won, while businesses that fail to label the country of origin are subject to an administrative fine of up to 10 million won.

Park Hae-cheong, Head of the Gyeongbuk Regional Office of the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, stated, “Through this regular crackdown, we will protect flower growers and guarantee consumers’ right to know,” and urged the public to “actively report any products lacking country of origin labeling or suspected mislabeling via phone (1588-8112) or the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service website.”
