Oh Young-jun, a preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea's Jung-gu District Mayor in Daegu, announced campaign pledges under the banner of a "Jung-gu style filial piety system" ahead of Parents' Day. This policy is designed to support the "sandwich generation"—those in their 30s to 50s who are simultaneously responsible for childcare and caring for their parents.
On the 7th, Candidate Oh stated, "I will create a system where residents prepare the spirit of filial piety, and the Jung-gu District Office assists in expressing it." He presented lifestyle-oriented policies that share the burden of caregiving and filial devotion through a public system rather than leaving it to individuals.
Key pledges include the introduction of "Jung-gu style village buses" to assist the elderly with hospital visits and grocery shopping; the expansion of nighttime emergency care and public postpartum care centers for dual-income families and night shift workers; enhanced access to essential medical care through support for the continued operation of the main Kyungpook National University Hospital; and expanded safety management for alleyways.
Candidate Oh emphasized, "The 30-50 generation lives under a double burden of having to raise children while simultaneously caring for their parents." He added, "The administrative system must now relieve the burden of problems that were previously handled solely through individual feelings of guilt and responsibility." In particular, prospective candidate Oh announced plans to promote a "Jung-gu type one-stop care system" and measures to support housing stability for newly relocated parent households, referencing Gwangju’s "Gwangju-style integrated care" model and Gyeonggi Province’s policy of supporting Jeonse deposit return guarantee fees.
A campaign official explained that these pledges were formulated based on the real-life experiences and suggestions of members of the working mom and working dad camp.
"Over the past eight years, Jung-gu administration has often been limited to one-off events targeting the elderly," said prospective candidate Oh. "I will now transform the daily lives of Jung-gu residents through systematic care that bridges generations and the establishment of transportation and safety infrastructure."
