The Daegu City Chapter of the Progressive Party held a joint press conference with four candidates running in the local elections in downtown Daegu on the 8th, officially launching its election campaign.

The Daegu City Chapter of the Progressive Party held the press conference this morning in front of the sign marking the "Birthplace of the October Struggle" near the Daegu Concert House, stating, "We need a force with a 'spicy' spirit to represent the voices of marginalized citizens and keep the skewed political landscape in check."

The Progressive Party is fielding a total of four candidates for this local election: one district council member, two city council members, and one proportional representation city council member.

The party emphasized, "Although this represents only a fraction of the total electoral districts, the role of a progressive party is necessary for the dynamism and diversity of local politics."

Hwang Sun-gyu, the candidate for the Dong-gu Ma electoral district who announced his candidacy at the press conference, said, "The Progressive Party has played a role in capturing voices that have been marginalized and silenced by the institutional system."

He emphasized, “We need politics that listens to the residents rather than those who hold the power of nomination,” adding, “In Daegu’s Dong-gu and Dalseo-gu, I will create politics that changes the daily lives of citizens, not just politics that merely changes political colors.”

Candidate Hwang also addressed local issues in Dong-gu, stating, “I requested a public interest audit to normalize district administration, and regarding the extension of Subway Line 3 to the Innovation City, I collected resident signatures to demand a policy debate,” and declared, “I will continue to practice politics that stands on the side of the residents.”

Candidate Yang Eun-young read a message addressed to the citizens on behalf of the candidates. She stated, “While the monopolistic structure of politics and administration was tolerated, irresponsibility became the norm, and citizens’ resignation deepened,” adding, “The Progressive Party will become a catalyst for change.”

She continued, “I will pursue livelihood-centered policies such as establishing a regional public bank, expanding public housing, public hospitals, and integrated care, making nursing care costs covered by insurance, and sharing profits from renewable energy,” and declared, “I will do my utmost to ensure that workers’ right to work is guaranteed even in the AI era.” Choi Il-young, the candidate for the 4th Dong-gu electoral district, stated, “I will reflect the dreams and hopes of workers in the Daegu City Council,” while Choi Young-oh, the candidate for the 5th Dalseo electoral district, emphasized, “I will change Daegu politics, which has been ruined by the monopolistic structure of major political parties.”

Regarding the background of the venue selection, the Progressive Party explained, “We chose this location to reflect on the spirit of Daegu in a space where aspirations for resistance and a new society seethed, marking the 80th anniversary of the October Uprising this year.”

Candidate Hwang previously served as a member of the Dong-gu Council and the former chairman of the Daegu Dong-gu District Middle School Steering Committee, and currently serves as the chairman of the Progressive Party’s Daegu City Chapter. Candidate Yang currently serves as the chairman of the Labor Committee of the Progressive Party’s Daegu City Chapter and the head of the E-Mart branch of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Headquarters of the Mart Workers' Union, while Candidate Choi Young-oh is active as the Director of Organization for the Daegu Branch of the National Union of Non-Regular School Workers. Candidate Choi Il-young serves as the chairman of the Daegu Regional Chapter of the Korean Metal Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU).
