특히 그는 추 후보에게도 “잘못된 컷오프를 바로잡으려는 노력이 없었다”며 “수월하게 이길 수 있었던 선거를 어렵게 만들었음에도 진심어린 사과도, 재발 방지 약속도 없었다”고 지적했다.

다만 “당대표와 추 후보가 공천 과정에 대해 사과하고 선거 지원을 요청했다. 대구와 당의 미래를 생각해 큰 마음으로 선대위에 참여하기로 했다”고 밝혔다.

주 부의장은 선대위 합류 배경으로 최근 선거 판세의 변화를 언급했다. 그는 “보수의 심장이라 불리는 대구가 지금 전례 없이 팽팽한 승부를 치르고 있다”며 “최근 여론조사에서 추 후보와 김부겸 후보가 오차범위 내 접전을 벌이고 있다”고 진단했다.

추 후보 역시 이날 “대구의 가장 큰 정치인인 주호영 부의장이 큰 결단을 내려줬다. 경제를 살리고 보수의 심장 대구를 지키자는 시민의 뜻이 반영된 결정”이라며 환영의 뜻을 밝혔다.

정치권에서는 이번 합류가 단순한 선대위 인사를 넘어서, 경선 후유증 봉합과 보수 재결집의 신호탄이 될지 주목하고 있다.
