올해로 26회를 맞은 ‘MAD About Jewelry’는 지난 5일부터 9일까지 미국 뉴욕에서 열리는 대표적인 아트주얼리 전시·판매 행사다.

1956년 설립된 MAD는 현대 스튜디오 주얼리와 아트주얼리 전용 갤러리를 상설 운영하는 미국 내 유일한 박물관으로, 관련 분야의 미학적·문화적 가치를 조명해 온 권위 있는 기관으로 평가받고 있다.

이번 전시는 일반 공모가 아닌 초청 큐레이션 방식으로 진행됐다. 동시대 예술 장신구 분야 대표 큐레이터인 브리나 폼프 디렉터가 혁신성과 예술적 완성도를 기준으로 전 세계 20개국에서 활동하는 작가 45명을 선정했다.

선정 작가들은 실험적 조형 작품을 통해 ‘착용 가능한 예술’의 가치를 제시하고 있으며, 나 교수 역시 자연을 모티브로 한 독창적 작품 세계를 선보이고 있다.

나 교수는 지난 10여 년간 탐구해 온 ‘자연의 잔해’를 몸 위의 조형 언어로 재해석한 회화적 감각의 작품 80점을 공개했다. 특히 씨앗과 뿌리를 주요 소재로 활용해 존재의 본질과 생성의 의미를 탐구한 점이 특징이다.

작품에는 건조된 뿌리와 황동 선으로 형상화한 열매 이미지가 활용됐으며, 자연에서 유래한 색조를 바탕으로 한 풍부한 색채 표현도 눈길을 끌고 있다.

나유리 교수는 숙명여자대학교를 졸업하고 핀란드 알토대학교(Aalto University)에서 박사 학위를 취득했다. 핀란드 정부초청 장학생과 일본 이타미 국제주얼리전 수상 등 다양한 국제 경력을 보유하고 있으며, 미국 Lark Books의 '1000 Rings(1000개의 반지)'에 작품이 수록되는 등 국제적으로 작품성을 인정받아 왔다.

나 교수는 “국제적 상징성을 가진 뉴욕 MAD 전시에 초청된 것은 대학 내 연구와 창작 성과가 세계적으로 공인받았다는 의미”라며 “제자들의 해외 공모전 수상 성과를 바탕으로 향후 북미를 비롯한 국제 무대 진출을 적극 지원하겠다”고 말했다.

Keimyung University Professor Na Yu-ri Officially Invited to ‘MAD About Jewelry’ at New York MAD

Professor Na Yu-ri of the Department of Craft Design at Keimyung University’s College of Fine Arts is showcasing 80 of her works after being officially invited to ‘MAD About Jewelry (MAJ),’ a flagship art jewelry event hosted by the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York.

Celebrating its 26th edition this year, ‘MAD About Jewelry’ is a representative art jewelry exhibition and sales event held in New York from the 5th to the 9th.

Established in 1956, MAD is the only museum in the United States that permanently operates galleries dedicated to contemporary studio jewelry and art jewelry, and is regarded as an authoritative institution that has highlighted the aesthetic and cultural value of the field.

This exhibition was conducted through an invitation-based curation method rather than a general open call. Director Brina Pomp, a leading curator in the field of contemporary art jewelry, selected 45 artists from 20 countries around the world based on innovation and artistic quality.

The selected artists present the value of "wearable art" through experimental sculptural works, and Professor Na also showcases a unique artistic world inspired by nature.

Professor Na has unveiled 80 works with a painterly sensibility that reinterpret the "remnants of nature," which she has explored for the past decade, into a sculptural language on the body. A notable feature is her use of seeds and roots as primary materials to explore the essence of existence and the meaning of creation.

The works utilize dried roots and fruit images shaped with brass wire, while the rich color expressions based on hues derived from nature are also drawing attention.

Professor Na Yu-ri graduated from Sookmyung Women's University and earned her doctoral degree from Aalto University in Finland. She possesses diverse international experience, including serving as a Finnish government scholarship recipient and winning an award at the Itami International Jewelry Exhibition in Japan. Her work has also been internationally recognized for its artistic merit, with her pieces being featured in Lark Books' *1000 Rings*. Professor Na stated, “Being invited to the New York MAD exhibition, which holds international significance, signifies that the research and creative achievements within the university have been globally recognized,” adding, “Based on my students’ success in international competitions, I will actively support their future expansion onto the global stage, including North America.”
