Gyeongju City Launches Full-Scale Stream Disaster Prevention Project in Geoncheon District… Investing 13.6 Billion Won to Prevent Flooding Damage
Gyeongju City is launching the ‘Daecheon (Geoncheon District) Stream Disaster Prevention Project’ in earnest for the area spanning from Undae-ri, Seomyeon to Daegok-ri, Geoncheon-eup.
According to Gyeongju City on the 13th, this project was established to proactively respond to recurring flood damage during heavy rainfall and to prevent loss of life and property damage to residents by strengthening flood control capabilities through permanent stream maintenance.
The project area covers the stretch from Undae-ri, Seomyeon to Daegok-ri, Geoncheon-eup, with a total project cost of 13.6 billion won (8.2 billion won from the provincial government and 5.4 billion won from the city government). The city plans to proceed with 2.5 km of stream maintenance, the replacement of two bridges, and the installation of 13 drainage structures by 2028. Gyeongsangbuk-do Province commenced the detailed design service for this project in January 2021, and the project was transferred to Gyeongju City in October 2023. Currently, compensation negotiations and various administrative procedures are underway. The city plans to begin full-scale construction as soon as these procedures are finalized and aims for completion in July 2028.
Once the project is completed, it is expected to significantly contribute to improving areas prone to chronic flooding and preventing flood damage to farmlands and residential areas caused by torrential rains.
In parallel, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province is also pursuing the "Daecheon (Seomyeon-Undae District) River Disaster Prevention Project" in the area between Ahwa-ri and Undae-ri in Seomyeon. This project involves investing a total of 43 billion won to maintain 5.9 km of rivers and replace three bridges; the current progress rate stands at 75%, with completion targeted for the second half of next year.
Choi Hyeok-jun, Acting Mayor of Gyeongju, said, “As localized torrential rains become more frequent due to climate change, the importance of preventing river disasters is growing,” adding, “We will do our best to create a safe river environment where citizens can feel secure by pushing forward with the project without any setbacks.”
