김 후보는 14일 오후 대구에서 열린 통합신공항 시민추진단 간담회에서 “대구가 현재 가장 막혀 있는 물꼬를 트는 방법을 고민하다 결국 신공항 문제를 풀어야 시민들께 지지를 호소할 수 있다고 판단했다”고 밝혔다.

그는 통합신공항 이전 자체에는 찬성하면서도, 지금과 같은 구조로는 대구시 예산만으로 사업을 감당하기 힘들다는 점을 역설했다. 김 후보는 “군공항 이전에 11조 원이 넘게 들어가는데, 대구시의 1년 예산으로는 턱없이 부족하다”며 “이제는 국가가 직접 책임지는 구조로 바꿔야 한다”고 말했다.

이어 “현재 법 체계상 통합신공항은 단순히 ‘국가 지원 사업’ 수준에 머무르고 있다. 이 수준을 넘어서 실질적인 국가 사업으로 강화해야 한다”며 “특별법을 개정해 정부의 책임을 분명히 하겠다”고 덧붙였다.

김 후보는 또, 활주로 확장과 계류장·청사·주차장 등 민간공항 기능 확대의 필요성도 설명했다. 그는 “기존 대구공항은 한계가 분명하다. 군위·의성으로 옮겨 새롭게 짓는 공항은 대형 화물기나 장거리 국제노선까지 소화할 수 있도록 만들어야 한다"고 밝혔다.

특히 그는 공항 건설이 단순한 교통 인프라 구축을 넘어 지역 산업 구조 재편의 계기가 될 것이라고 강조했다. 김 후보는 “공항이 생기면 구미 산업단지는 다시 활력을 찾을 것이고, 대구 기업들의 물류 경쟁력도 크게 높아진다. 경산·영천·경주 지역의 자동차 부품 산업도 세계적인 경쟁력을 확보하게 될 것”이라고 전망했다.

대기업 투자 유치 방안도 내놓았다. 그는 “사업이 일정 궤도에 오르면 국내 5대 그룹에도 투자 참여를 제안하겠다”며 “공항과 산업 인프라가 갖춰지면 대기업들도 충분히 관심을 가질 것”이라고 말했다.

아울러 김 후보는 신공항과 대구·경북 행정통합 문제의 연계성도 언급했다. 그는 “수도권 집중이 심각한 상황에서 대구·경북이 살아남으려면 결국 통합이 필요하다”며, “500만 명 규모의 경제권을 만들어야 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있다”고 주장했다.

또 “행정통합이 이뤄지면 정부로부터 대규모 재정 지원도 가능하다”며 “가급적 빨리 통합 단체장을 선출해 지역 미래 전략을 본격적으로 추진해야 한다”고 강조했다.

Candidate Kim predicted, “Once the airport is established, the Gumi Industrial Complex will regain vitality, and the logistics competitiveness of Daegu companies will significantly improve. He also presented plans to attract investment from large corporations. He stated, “Once the project is on track, I will propose investment participation to the nation’s top five conglomerates,” adding, “Once the airport and industrial infrastructure are established, large corporations will also show sufficient interest.”
