박희정 후보는 “보조금은 시민의 것이지 권력의 것이 아니다”라며 “일반 시민과 단체는 사업계획서 제출부터 심사·정산까지 엄격한 절차를 거치는데, 당시 단체 회장이던 인물 재임 시절 추경을 통해 거액 보조금이 편성·집행된 과정은 시민 눈높이에서 납득하기 어렵다”고 주장했다.

그는 시민단체 측이 제기한 공직선거법·이해충돌방지법 위반 가능성과 자부담금 관련 기부행위, 증빙자료 허위 제출 의혹 등을 언급하며 “시장 후보라면 수사 결과 이전이라도 시민 앞에 사실관계를 설명할 책임이 있다”고 압박했다.

수사기관을 향해서도 “단순한 정치 공방으로 넘길 문제가 아니다”며 “혈세 집행 과정과 절차의 적법성을 신속하고 엄정하게 규명해야 한다”고 촉구했다.

박 후보는 의혹 제기에 그치지 않고 향후 시정 운영 방향도 제시했다. 그는 “선출직이라는 이유로 보조금이 움직였다는 의혹이 사실이라면 더 큰 권한 남용으로 이어질 수 있다는 우려가 나온다”며 ▲보조금 심사 기준 공개 확대 ▲이해충돌 사전 점검 강화 ▲집행·정산 상시 감사 체계 구축 등을 약속했다.

같은 날 박승호 후보도 별도 기자회견을 열어 국민의힘 공천 과정과 박용선 후보의 사법 리스크 문제를 정조준했다.

박승호 후보는 “이번 국민의힘 포항시장 후보 선출은 시민 상식과 기대를 무너뜨린 밀실 공천이었다”며 “짜고 치는 공천이라는 비판 속에 전국적인 조롱거리로 전락했다”고 주장했다.

이어 “최종 후보가 된 인물은 수개월간 진행된 지역 언론사 여론조사 18차례에서 단 한 번도 상위권 경쟁력을 입증하지 못했던 후보”라며 “반면 여러 차례 상위권을 기록했던 후보들은 줄줄이 컷오프됐다”고 지적했다.

박 후보는 특히 검찰 수사 문제를 집중 부각했다. 그는 “공금 횡령 의혹과 공직선거법 위반 의혹 등 중대한 사안으로 수사가 진행 중인데도 국민의힘은 아무런 설명 없이 공천을 강행했다”며 “사법 리스크가 현실화되면 포항은 또다시 시장 선거를 치르는 혼란에 빠질 수 있다”고 주장했다.

또 “포항은 대한민국 산업화의 심장이자 보수의 본향인데 지금은 불공정과 부패의 도시로 전락할 위기에 놓여 있다”며 “이번 선거는 단순한 승패가 아니라 포항의 자존심과 지역 정치의 상식을 지키는 선거”라고 강조했다.

지역 정가에서는 민주당 후보와 무소속 후보가 동시에 박용선 후보를 향한 공세 수위를 높이면서 오히려 국민의힘 지지층의 표심 결집 현상이 나타날 수 있다는 관측도 나온다. 반면 일각에서는 각종 의혹과 공천 논란이 중도층 민심에 영향을 줄 가능성도 제기되면서 선거 막판 최대 변수로 떠오르는 분위기다.

국민의힘 측은 야권과 무소속 진영의 잇단 공세에 대해 “선거를 앞둔 정치적 흠집내기”라는 입장을 유지하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다.

On the same day, Candidate Park Seung-ho also held a separate press conference, directly targeting the People Power Party’s nomination process and Candidate Park Yong-sun’s legal risks.

Candidate Park Seung-ho asserted, “The selection of the People Power Party’s candidate for Pohang Mayor was a backroom nomination that shattered the common sense and expectations of the citizens,” adding that “it has degenerated into a national laughingstock amidst criticism that it was a rigged nomination.”

He argued, “The People Power Party pushed ahead with the nomination without any explanation, even though an investigation into serious matters, such as allegations of embezzlement of public funds and violations of the Public Official Election Act, is underway,” warning that “if the legal risks materialize, Pohang could fall into the chaos of holding another mayoral election.”

He also emphasized, “Pohang is the heart of Korea’s industrialization and the home of conservatism, yet it is currently in danger of degenerating into a city of unfairness and corruption,” adding that “this election is not merely about winning or losing, but about protecting Pohang’s pride and the common sense of local politics.”

In local political circles, there are observations that as the Democratic Party candidate and the independent candidate simultaneously intensify their attacks on Candidate Park Yong-sun, it could actually lead to a consolidation of votes among the People Power Party’s support base. On the other hand, some suggest that various allegations and nomination controversies could influence the sentiment of the centrist electorate, creating an atmosphere where these factors are emerging as the biggest variables in the final stages of the election.
