Gyeongju City Launches Full-Scale Environmental Maintenance at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond… Promoting Aquatic Plant Removal and Water Quality Management

Gyeongju City is launching full-scale projects for aquatic plant maintenance and water quality management to maintain a pleasant landscape and improve the ecological environment of Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, a representative historical and cultural tourist site.

Gyeongju City announced on the 22nd that it will conduct aquatic plant removal work and regular water quality inspections within the pond to improve water quality and preserve the landscape of Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond.

The city is carrying out an aquatic plant maintenance project covering approximately 13,000 square meters of the Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond area, investing a total budget of 200 million won from April to November of this year. The project will be conducted 10 times annually, with plans for intensive maintenance twice a month during July and August, when aquatic plant growth is most active.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is a representative historical site containing the detached palace of the Silla royal court and an artificial pond; however, complaints regarding landscape damage have been consistently raised recently due to the excessive proliferation of aquatic plants.

Along with the removal of aquatic plants, Gyeongju City is also embarking on systematic water quality management. To this end, a total of 10 water quality inspections are scheduled to be conducted by the end of this year, with a project budget of 9 million won.

Water quality inspections will be conducted on the third week of every month, targeting the inlet, outlet, and the central part of the pond. Based on the inspection results, the city plans to analyze trends in water quality changes to establish efficient management measures.

This project is being pursued as a measure to preserve the historical value and cultural landscape of Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond while maintaining the health of the aquatic ecosystem.

The city expects that through continuous management of aquatic plants and water quality inspections, it will be able to improve the pond's landscape and create a more pleasant viewing environment by preventing the occurrence of algal blooms and foul odors.

Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young stated, "Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond are precious historical and cultural heritage sites that showcase the essence of Silla culture," adding, "We will develop them into a historical and cultural landmark that citizens and tourists can visit with greater comfort through regular environmental management and water quality improvement projects."
