Keimyung University Institute for Women’s Studies Publishes Volume 3 of ‘Transition to a Care Society’ Research Series… Presents Feminist Community Solutions
As the care crisis emerges as a core agenda across society due to low birth rates and an aging population, research findings exploring the transition to a care-centered society have been compiled into a book.
The Institute for Women’s Studies at Keimyung University announced the publication of Volume 3 of its research series, *Transition to a Care Society and Feminist Communities* (published by Iyagi, 258 pages, 18,000 won), which synthesizes the results of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Project by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
As a follow-up to Volume 1 (2024) and Volume 2 (2025), this volume comprehensively covers the transition to a ‘care society’—reconstructing care as a central social value—and community models from a feminist perspective. Taking the structural crisis revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic as a starting point, the research team raised the critical issue that the existing growth-oriented economic system has been threatening lives and daily life. Based on this, the study proposed the necessity of transitioning from a structure centered on profit and growth to a society centered on the "production of life" based on a "good life."
The research also focused on practical examples of women who are reconstructing their local communities as the foundation of their lives. In particular, amidst complex crises, it utilized the concept of "hope as a project" presented by German philosopher Ernst Bloch as a core theoretical framework, interpreting utopia not as a completed future, but as a way of thinking that rethinks the present.
This series includes a total of seven papers. It re-examines the essential meaning of care work even in the era of digital transformation and the proliferation of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that it is relationship-based labor that is difficult to completely replace with technology. This aligns with the discussions on reproductive labor by American feminist scholar Silvia Federici.
Individual studies covered the analysis of social structures through Nancy Fraser's critical theory, a review of the direction of new social contracts, and ethical approaches to child care policies following de-familization. Additionally, the reality of platform care work centered on middle-aged women was analyzed through the cases of childcare providers and elderly life support workers in the Daegu region. Along with this, possibilities for alternative lifestyles were presented through examples of community-based initiatives, such as the elderly women's community, the 'Gyeongsang-do Non-Married Women's Community WITH,' and Jeonju's 'Re-reading Women.'
Professor Ahn Sook-young of the Department of Women's Studies stated, "In a situation where the care crisis is intensifying due to low birth rates and an aging population, it is more important than ever to re-recognize the social value of care." She added, "I hope this research series will contribute to reimagining the future of care and communities."
Meanwhile, the Keimyung University Institute of Women's Studies, established in 2003, is the only specialized research institution for women's studies in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. It continues to promote women's studies research and academic exchange through regular academic events and the publication of the journal *Gender and Culture*.
