【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=경북대학교 김상현 바이오융합연구원장(석좌교수)이 세계 최고 권위의 약리학 분야 국제학술대회인 ‘2034 세계 기초 및 임상 약리학 총회’(WCP 2034)를 대구에 유치하는 데 성공했다.
국제기초·임상약리학연합(IUPHAR)은 15일(현지시간) 호주 멜버른에서 열린 총회에서 2034년 대회 개최지로 대구를 최종 선정했다고 밝혔다. 이 대회는 전 세계 90여 개국에서 3천여 명의 연구자, 의료진, 제약산업 관계자들이 참가하는 세계 최대 규모의 약리학 학술행사로, 2034년 11월 대구 엑스코에서 개최된다.
총회 기간 동안 학술 심포지엄과 기술 워크숍, 네트워킹 행사, 산업 전시회 등이 함께 진행된다. 한국관광공사 분석에 따르면 약 142억 원의 생산 유발 효과와 66억 원의 부가가치 유발 효과가 기대돼 지역 경제 활성화에도 큰 도움이 될 전망이다.
이번 유치 성공에는 대한약리학회 WCP 2034 유치위원장을 맡은 김상현 원장이 주축이 됐다. 김 원장은 대구시, 대한약리학회, 대한임상약리학회, 한국관광공사, 엑스코 등과 긴밀히 협력하면서 대구의 연구 경쟁력과 국제회의 개최 역량을 집중적으로 알렸다.
경북대 바이오융합연구원도 유치 과정에 힘을 보탰다. 바이오융합연구원은 경북대 글로컬대학사업의 핵심 연구기관으로, 인공지능과 바이오를 결합한 신약 개발 연구를 적극적으로 추진 중이다. 현재 연구원은 과학기술정보통신부의 'AI 기반 약물 장기 독성 예측 플랫폼 기술개발 사업'(100억 원)과 'AI×바이오 혁신연구거점 조성 시범사업'(540억 원) 등 총 640억 원 규모 국가 연구개발사업을 수행하며 AI 기반 신약 개발 역량을 지속적으로 강화하고 있다.
경북대학교는 이번 총회 유치를 계기로 바이오융합연구원을 중심으로 한 AI 기반 신약개발과 다학제 융합연구 성과를 세계 연구진과 적극 공유하는 한편, 글로벌 공동 연구, 해외 우수 연구자 유치, 기술사업화 확대에도 본격적으로 나설 계획이다.
특히 총회 개최를 통해 대구가 국내를 넘어 아시아 바이오·제약 연구의 국제 협력 거점으로 도약할 수 있을 것이라는 기대가 커지고 있다.
김상현 경북대 바이오융합연구원장은 “WCP 2034 유치는 대한약리학회를 비롯해 여러 기관이 힘을 모아 이룬 성과이자, 우리나라 약리학 연구 역량이 세계적으로 인정받은 결과”라며 “앞으로도 글로벌 공동연구를 확대하고, AI 기반 신약개발 및 기술사업화를 통해 대구가 세계적인 바이오 혁신 허브로 자리매김할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

According to an analysis by the Korea Tourism Organization, the event is expected to generate approximately 14.2 billion won in production inducement effects and 6.6 billion won in value-added inducement effects, which is projected to significantly contribute to the revitalization of the local economy. Director Kim Sang-hyun, who served as the Chairman of the Korean Society of Pharmacology's WCP 2034 Bid Committee, played a pivotal role in the successful bid. Director Kim collaborated closely with Daegu City, the Korean Society of Pharmacology, the Korean Society of Clinical Pharmacology, the Korea Tourism Organization, and EXCO to intensively promote Daegu's research competitiveness and its capacity to host international conferences.
The Kyungpook National University Bio-Convergence Research Institute also contributed to the bid process. As a core research institution under Kyungpook National University's Glocal University Project, the Bio-Convergence Research Institute is actively pursuing research on new drug development that combines artificial intelligence and biotechnology. Currently, the institute is continuously strengthening its AI-based drug development capabilities by carrying out national R&D projects totaling 64 billion KRW, including the Ministry of Science and ICT's 'Development of AI-based Long-term Drug Toxicity Prediction Platform Technology Project' (10 billion KRW) and the 'Pilot Project for Establishing AI×Bio Innovation Research Hubs' (54 billion KRW). Taking advantage of hosting this general assembly, Kyungpook National University plans to actively share the achievements of AI-based drug development and multidisciplinary convergence research, centered on the Institute of Bio-Convergence, with researchers worldwide. Furthermore, the university intends to embark on full-scale initiatives for global joint research, attracting top overseas researchers, and expanding technology commercialization.
In particular, there is growing anticipation that hosting the general assembly will enable Daegu to leap forward as an international hub for bio-pharmaceutical research in Asia, extending beyond the domestic stage.
