POSTECH Develops 3D Fusion Imaging Technology to Capture Large Blood Vessels in a Single Scan
Domestic researchers have developed medical imaging technology capable of generating 3D images with a single scan, without the need to stitch multiple images together, when photographing blood vessels in large areas such as hands or feet.
POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) announced that a research team led by Professor Kim Chul-hong from the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of IT Convergence, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Graduate School of Convergence Engineering has jointly developed a 3D photoacoustic and ultrasound integrated imaging system capable of capturing large-area regions in a single scan, in collaboration with the Siemens Healthineers ultrasound probe research team.
Participating in the research were Dr. Park Shin-young from the Global Healthcare Biomedical Engineering Research Institute, Sung Min-sik from the Integrated Mechanical Engineering program, and Kim Hyun-hee from the IT Convergence Engineering doctoral program. The research results were published in the international optics journal 'Laser & Photonics Reviews' on the 8th (local time).
Photoacoustic-ultrasound fusion imaging is a diagnostic technology that combines photoacoustic signals generated by blood vessels with ultrasound images to simultaneously verify the condition of blood vessels and the internal structure of the human body. However, there were limitations, such as the need for expensive equipment as the imaging range widens and distortion occurring during the process of combining multiple images.
To address these issues, the research team applied Digital Multiplexing technology, which sequentially controls internal elements of the ultrasound transducer. Instead of driving hundreds of ultrasound elements simultaneously, the system was designed to rapidly control them in specific intervals, thereby reducing hardware complexity and cost burdens while maintaining image quality.
Furthermore, by utilizing an FPGA (Semiconductor-based Programmable Control Chip) to precisely control 768 ultrasound elements, the system was implemented to capture large areas in a single scan without the need to stitch multiple images together as in conventional methods.
In the experiment, imaging was conducted on the palm, back of the hand, forearm, and foot, and microvascular structures were clearly confirmed in 3D images. Unlike conventional ultrasound probes, which used 128 to 192 elements and could only image a width of approximately 38 mm, this new system utilizes 768 elements to expand the imaging range to a maximum of 154 mm.
The research team calculated blood oxygen concentration using light of various wavelengths and verified measurement accuracy by comparing the results with pulse oximeters used in hospitals.
The researchers anticipate that if this technology is applied in actual medical settings, it will be possible to image a wide area at once, thereby securing more accurate vascular information. In particular, they predict significant potential for use in evaluating the recovery of blood flow in patients with diabetes or burns and trauma, who require continuous monitoring of their blood circulation.
Professor Kim Chul-hong of POSTECH stated, "By applying digital control technology, we have resolved the issues of hardware scalability and system complexity that had been hindering the commercialization of large-area photoacoustic-ultrasound fusion imaging technology." Park Sung-sik, Managing Director at Siemens Healthineers, stated, "We collaborated with POSTECH from the early stages of development to realize a next-generation imaging structure based on commercial hardware," adding that "this is an example demonstrating the potential for expanding medical device technology through industry-academia collaboration."
Meanwhile, this research was conducted with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea, the Ministry of Education’s University Research Center Project, the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Mid-Career Researcher Project, the Deep Science Startup Activation Support Project, the Biomedical Technology Development Project, the National Research Center (NRL 2.0) Project, the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Health and Medical Technology Research and Development Project, and the BK21 FOUR Project.
