김 시장은 “국군사관학교 설립은 대한민국 장교 양성 체계와 국방교육의 방향을 결정하는 중요한 국가 정책”이라며 “충분한 논의와 객관적인 검토를 바탕으로 추진돼야 한다”고 강조했다.
이어 영천에 위치한 육군3사관학교의 역할과 가치도 함께 고려해야 한다고 밝혔다. 김 시장은 “육군3사관학교는 오랜 기간 대한민국 육군 장교를 배출해 온 국가 핵심 교육기관”이라며 “새로운 국방교육 체계 구축 과정에서 기존 기관의 기능과 역량이 약화되는 방향으로 추진돼서는 안 된다”고 말했다.
또한 “국군사관학교 설립은 단순히 교육기관을 추가하는 차원이 아니라 국가 장교 양성 시스템 전반을 재편하는 사업”이라며 “이미 구축된 국방교육 인프라를 어떻게 효과적으로 활용할 것인지에 대한 검토가 반드시 병행돼야 한다”고 설명했다.
