포항시는 28일 시청 대회의실에서 ‘제14회 환동해 국제심포지엄’을 열고 전쟁과 에너지 위기, 인공지능(AI) 시대를 주제로 포항의 성장 방향과 환동해권 발전 전략을 논의했다고 밝혔다.

영남일보가 주관한 이번 심포지엄에는 박용선 포항시장과 국내외 전문가들이 참석해 국제질서 변화와 경제 불확실성 속에서 지역 산업 경쟁력을 강화할 방안을 모색했다.

행사에서는 미·중 갈등과 글로벌 공급망 변화, 에너지 안보 문제 등 최근 국제 환경 변화를 분석하고, 북극항로와 에너지 산업, 철강·이차전지 등 포항의 주요 전략산업과 연계한 미래 성장 방향이 집중적으로 다뤄졌다.

기조 강연에 나선 김현욱 세종연구소장은 ‘전쟁으로 급변하는 국제정세(지정학)와 한국’을 주제로 세계 질서 재편 과정에서 한국이 안보와 경제 분야의 대응 역량을 높이고 변화 속에서 새로운 기회를 찾아야 한다고 강조했다.

이어 장혜지(张慧智) 중국 길림대학교 동북아연구원 부원장은 ‘미·중 경제(무역·관세·환율) 전쟁과 한·중 협력’을 주제로 미·중 경쟁이 글로벌 경제에 미치는 영향을 설명하고, 한·중 간 실질적인 협력 확대를 위한 방안을 제시했다.

송원근 현대경제연구원장은 ‘에너지, 고물가, 고환율, 스태그플레이션 위기 속 한국의 전략’을 주제로 에너지 안보 강화와 산업 경쟁력 확보, 새로운 성장동력 발굴의 중요성을 언급했다.

이후 진행된 패널토론에서는 배규성 경희대학교 연구교수를 좌장으로 신훈규 포스텍 교수, 박재범 포스코경영연구원 수석연구원, 이동현 한국수력원자력 재생에너지처장, 바딤 슬렙첸코(Vadim Slepchenko) 서울대학교 아시아연구소 연구교수, 장하용 부산연구원 책임연구원 등이 참여했다.

참석자들은 ▲AI 기반 산업 전환에 따른 포항의 미래 발전 전략 ▲이차전지 등 첨단 전략산업 경쟁력 강화 ▲에너지 위기 대응과 재생에너지 확대 방안 ▲북극항로 활용 가능성과 동해안권 발전 방향 ▲한·러 에너지 협력 가능성 등을 중심으로 의견을 나눴다.

박용선 포항시장은 “세계 경제와 산업 구조가 빠르게 변화하는 상황에서 기존 철강산업의 경쟁력을 높이는 동시에 AI와 에너지, 북극항로 등 새로운 성장 분야를 적극 발굴해야 한다”며 “환동해권 협력을 확대해 포항이 미래 산업 중심도시로 자리매김할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.

Pohang City has set out to formulate future development strategies to respond to rapidly changing international circumstances and shifts in the industrial environment.

Pohang City announced that it held the "14th International Symposium on the East Sea Rim" on the 28th at the City Hall Conference Room, discussing Pohang's growth direction and development strategies for the East Sea Rim region under the themes of war, the energy crisis, and the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

Organized by the Yeongnam Ilbo, the symposium was attended by Pohang Mayor Park Yong-sun and domestic and international experts to explore ways to strengthen regional industrial competitiveness amidst changes in the international order and economic uncertainty.

The event analyzed recent changes in the international environment, such as the U.S.-China conflict, shifts in global supply chains, and energy security issues. It also focused intensively on future growth directions linked to Pohang's major strategic industries, including the Arctic shipping route, the energy industry, steel, and secondary batteries.

In his keynote address titled "Korea and the Rapidly Changing International Situation (Geopolitics) Due to War," Kim Hyun-wook, President of the Sejong Institute, emphasized that Korea must enhance its response capabilities in the security and economic sectors and seek new opportunities amidst change during the reshaping of the global order.

Following this, Zhang Huizhi, Vice President of the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies at Jilin University in China, spoke on the topic of "The U.S.-China Economic War (Trade, Tariffs, Exchange Rates) and Korea-China Cooperation." He explained the impact of U.S.-China competition on the global economy and presented measures to expand practical cooperation between Korea and China.

Song Won-keun, President of the Hyundai Research Institute, addressed the topic of "Korea's Strategy Amidst the Crisis of Energy, High Inflation, High Exchange Rates, and Stagflation," highlighting the importance of strengthening energy security, securing industrial competitiveness, and discovering new growth engines. In the subsequent panel discussion, chaired by Research Professor Bae Kyu-sung of Kyung Hee University, participants included Professor Shin Hoon-kyu of POSTECH, Senior Researcher Park Jae-beom of POSCO Research Institute, Lee Dong-hyun, Head of the Renewable Energy Department at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Research Professor Vadim Slepchenko of the Asia Research Institute at Seoul National University, and Senior Researcher Jang Ha-yong of the Busan Institute of Science and Technology.

The participants exchanged views focusing on: Pohang's future development strategies in response to the transition to AI-based industries; strengthening the competitiveness of advanced strategic industries such as secondary batteries; responding to the energy crisis and measures to expand renewable energy; the potential for utilizing the Arctic Sea Route and the development direction of the East Coast region; and the possibilities for Korea-Russia energy cooperation.

Pohang Mayor Park Yong-sun stated, "In a situation where the global economy and industrial structure are rapidly changing, we must enhance the competitiveness of the existing steel industry while actively identifying new growth sectors such as AI, energy, and the Arctic Sea Route." He added, "We will strive to expand cooperation in the East Sea Rim so that Pohang can establish itself as a central city for future industries."
