경주시는 ‘2026 글로벌 관광특구 육성사업’ 공모에 최종 선정돼 국비 30억 원을 확보했다고 31일 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 수도권과 제주를 제외한 전국 관광특구를 대상으로 관광 콘텐츠 개발과 외국인 관광객 수용 환경 개선 등을 지원하는 문화체육관광부 공모사업이다.

경주시는 이번 선정에 따라 내년까지 총 60억 원을 투입해 글로벌 관광특구 조성에 나선다. 사업비는 국비 30억 원과 지방비 30억 원으로 구성되며, 역사문화자원을 활용한 체류형 관광 활성화와 글로벌 관광 기반 확충에 활용될 예정이다.

시는 경주가 보유한 세계문화유산과 신라 역사문화 콘텐츠, 국제행사 운영 경험 등을 바탕으로 차별화된 관광특구 조성 계획을 마련했다. 특히 ‘One More Night, Gyeongju’를 핵심 브랜드로 내세워 관광객이 하루 더 머무르는 체류형 관광도시 전략을 추진한다.

주요 사업으로는 글로벌 브랜드 구축과 해외 홍보 강화, 지속가능관광 인증체계 도입, 인공지능(AI) 기반 관광데이터 플랫폼 구축 등이 포함된다. 이와 함께 야간관광 프로그램과 신라문화 체험 콘텐츠 확대, 외국인 간편결제 시스템 및 통합투어패스 도입, AI 관광 안내 키오스크 설치, 외국인 관광택시 운영 개선 등 관광 편의성을 높이는 사업도 추진한다.

경주시는 이번 사업을 통해 외국인 관광객의 이동과 체류 편의를 개선하고, 야간 콘텐츠와 체험 프로그램 확대를 통해 관광객 체류시간과 지역 내 소비를 함께 늘린다는 계획이다.

또한 민간과 행정, 교육기관이 참여하는 관광 거버넌스를 구축해 지역 관광기업과 상권이 함께 성장하는 지속가능한 관광 생태계를 조성할 방침이다.

주낙영 경주시장은 "글로벌 관광특구 선정은 경주가 대한민국 대표 역사문화도시를 넘어 세계인이 찾는 관광도시로 성장하는 중요한 전환점"이라며 "신라문화와 세계문화유산을 기반으로 차별화된 체류형 관광 콘텐츠를 확대하고, 관광객이 다시 찾고 오래 머무는 도시를 만들기 위해 최선을 다하겠다"고 말했다.

김석기 국회의원은 "이번 사업 선정은 경주의 역사문화 자원을 세계적 관광 경쟁력으로 발전시키는 계기가 될 것"이라며 "사업이 원활하게 추진될 수 있도록 필요한 지원을 지속적으로 이어가겠다"고 밝혔다.

Key initiatives include building a global brand, strengthening overseas promotion, introducing a sustainable tourism certification system, and establishing an AI-based tourism data platform. Through these initiatives, Gyeongju City plans to improve the mobility and convenience of foreign tourists, and to increase both their length of stay and local consumption by expanding night content and experience programs.

Furthermore, the city intends to establish a tourism governance structure involving the private sector, government, and educational institutions to create a sustainable tourism ecosystem where local tourism businesses and commercial districts can grow together. Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young stated, "The selection as a Global Tourism Special Zone marks a significant turning point for Gyeongju to grow beyond being Korea's representative historical and cultural city into a global tourist destination." He added, "We will do our utmost to expand differentiated stay-type tourism content based on Silla culture and World Heritage sites, and to create a city that tourists want to revisit and stay for a long time."

National Assembly member Kim Seok-gi remarked, "This project selection will serve as an opportunity to develop Gyeongju's historical and cultural resources into global tourism competitiveness," and added, "We will continue to provide necessary support to ensure the project proceeds smoothly."
