Researchers at Kumoh National Institute of Technology have developed a new material that will take the performance of sodium-ion batteries, which are gaining attention as next-generation energy storage devices, to the next level. In this study, utilizing a tin-based nanocomposite anode material, they achieved an energy density of 263.3 Wh/kg and an initial Coulomb efficiency of approximately 100%, surpassing existing limitations. Furthermore, by confirming stable performance even in high-rate charge/discharge environments of 10C, the research is evaluated as bringing the field one step closer to the commercialization of next-generation batteries.
According to Kumoh National Institute of Technology on the 3rd, a research team led by Professor Park Cheol-min of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering succeeded in developing a tin (Sn)-based nanocomposite anode material in collaboration with a research team led by Professor Jeon Ki-jun of Inha University. The results of this research were published in the July 2026 issue of the international materials science journal ‘Advanced Functional Materials’.
Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries. Sodium has the advantage of being more abundant than lithium, offering superior price competitiveness, and is relatively easy to secure both domestically and internationally. However, due to its large ion size, it causes significant changes in the electrode structure during charging and discharging, leading to drawbacks such as reduced battery lifespan and output characteristics.
In particular, while tin anodes are considered promising materials due to their high theoretical capacity, significant volume changes and initial sodium loss during charging and discharging have acted as obstacles in actual applications.
To address this issue, the research team meticulously analyzed the reaction mechanism of tin during charging and discharging at the atomic level using tin K-edge X-ray absorption analysis with a synchrotron accelerator. Based on this, they fabricated a tin nanocomposite anode material through a mechanochemical reduction process utilizing tin oxide, aluminum, and carbon.
In the newly developed composite structure, aluminum oxide effectively buffers the volume changes of tin during charging and discharging, while the carbon material plays a role in enhancing electrical conductivity and structural stability. The research team further applied a direct-contact pre-sodiumation technology to significantly reduce the problem of sodium loss during initial charging.
As a result, a complete sodium-ion battery cell equipped with the new anode material recorded an energy density of 263.3 Wh/kg, and the initial Coulomb efficiency was approximately 100%. It operated stably without performance degradation even during high-rate charge/discharge tests under 10C conditions, leading to analysis that it possesses sufficient competitiveness in the battery market, which demands fast charging and high output.
This research is highly significant in that it simultaneously resolved the issues of volume change during charging and discharging, unstable reactions, and initial sodium loss—which have been cited as major weaknesses of tin anodes—through material design and reaction mechanism analysis.
Professor Park Cheol-min stated, "Through this research, we have systematically overcome the chronic limitations of tin anode materials, such as structural instability and reduced initial efficiency," adding, "We expect this to make a significant contribution to the practical application of sodium-ion batteries capable of high energy, high output, and rapid charging."
The research team at Kumoh National University of Technology plans to continue additional research with the goal of stabilizing the performance and commercializing sodium-ion batteries.
