Natural Antifungal Substance Found in Lobatos Plover… National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center Confirms Potential for Eco-friendly Fungicide Development

A natural substance extracted from Lobatos Plover, a native freshwater plant in Korea, has been confirmed to inhibit the growth of various crop pathogenic fungi, including those causing rice blast. This is being evaluated as opening up new possibilities for developing eco-friendly agricultural pest control technologies that can reduce reliance on synthetic fungicides.

The National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center, under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, announced that it has confirmed the antifungal efficacy of "Lobatoside C," a natural substance isolated from Lobatos Plover.

Pathogenic fungi are one of the major causes that hinder crop growth and reduce yields and quality. Currently, synthetic fungicides are widely used to control these diseases; however, interest in eco-friendly alternative technologies is growing as concerns regarding their potential impact on humans and the environment, as well as issues of drug resistance resulting from long-term use, are continuously being raised. Accordingly, researchers at the National Nakdong River Institute of Biological Resources have been conducting research since 2022 to identify natural antifungal components capable of inhibiting crop pathogenic fungi in freshwater plants. During the research process, they isolated an active ingredient exhibiting broad-spectrum antifungal effects from extracts of *Lysimachia japonica* and identified it as "Lovatoside-S."

Analysis revealed that this substance demonstrated efficacy in inhibiting the growth of various crop pathogenic fungi, including not only rice blast fungi but also damping-off and red mold fungi.

In particular, an examination of its mechanism of action targeting rice blast fungi, which cause significant damage to rice, revealed that Lovatoside-S inhibits the formation of appressoria, which are necessary for fungal spore germination and plant invasion. Appressoria are special structures created by pathogenic fungi to penetrate the plant's epidermis and invade the interior.

Based on these research findings, the National Nakdong River Institute of Biological Resources filed a patent application on the 10th for the antifungal use of Lovatoside-S against plant infectious fungi. The patent is titled "Antifungal Composition Against Plant-Infectious Fungi Using Lovatoside C," and the application number is "10-2026-0148891."

This study is significant in that it goes beyond merely confirming the antifungal effects of plant extracts to identifying the active ingredients that actually exert efficacy. The research team expects this to serve as foundational data that can be utilized for the future development of eco-friendly fungicides and the commercialization of related products.

Jeong Yu-jin, Head of the Utilization Technology Development Division at the National Nakdong River Biological Resources Center, stated, "We have discovered useful natural substances from domestic native biological resources and confirmed the potential to utilize them as eco-friendly agricultural pest control technologies." She added, "We will continue to expand research on the sustainable utilization of biological resources based on natural products."
