[Break News Pohang] Reporter Park Young-jae = As the third anniversary of Japan beginning the ocean discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant approaches, the Pohang Federation for Environmental Movements urged the Japanese government to halt the dumping and called for an active response from the South Korean government.

The Pohang Federation for Environmental Movements held a press conference at 11:00 AM on the 24th in front of the Sea City Hall at Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, condemning the Japanese government by stating, "The ocean dumping of Fukushima nuclear wastewater has continued for three years."

According to the Federation, since Japan began the ocean discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant on August 24, 2023, it has released approximately 171,600 tons into the Pacific Ocean in 22 separate batches to date. The most recent, 22nd discharge took place from July 30 to August 17.

The group criticized, stating, “As ocean dumping enters its third year, social interest is gradually fading, yet the dumping continues to this day,” and added, “The Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company plan to continue ocean dumping for decades to come.”

They further argued, “The Japanese government emphasizes that monitoring results for radioactive materials in seawater and seafood are below the standard limits, and our government is also repeating the stance that there are no safety issues based on this.”

They then asked, “Can we definitively conclude the safety of ocean dumping that will continue for decades simply because the concentration of radioactive materials currently measured in seawater is below the standard limits?” and emphasized, “Long-term, independent investigations and verification are needed not only for seawater but also for the entire marine ecosystem, including seabed sediments, benthic organisms, and fish and shellfish.”

The Pohang Federation for Environmental Movements argued that a regional monitoring system must be strengthened, particularly to ensure the food safety of Pohang’s fishermen, the fisheries industry, and citizens, who rely on the East Sea for their livelihoods. The group urged, “The dumping of Fukushima nuclear wastewater into the ocean is a global issue and is by no means someone else’s problem for Pohang,” adding, “Pohang City and North Gyeongsang Province must redouble their efforts in continuous monitoring and management of the East Sea and its marine products, as well as transparent information disclosure.”

They also called for an active response from President Lee Jae-myung. The Pohang Federation for Environmental Movements stated, “President Lee Jae-myung strongly opposed the ocean discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant when he was the leader of the opposition party,” and argued, “Now, as President, he must clarify that position and engage in active diplomacy to demand that the Japanese government stop ocean dumping.”

At the press conference held on this day, the group called for: ▲ the Japanese government to immediately stop the ocean dumping of Fukushima nuclear wastewater; ▲ the South Korean government to demand that the Japanese government stop the dumping; and ▲ North Gyeongsang Province and Pohang City to strengthen radiation monitoring of seafood along the East Coast.

The Pohang Federation for Environmental Movements repeatedly emphasized, “The ocean is not a nuclear waste disposal site,” and “the Japanese government must immediately stop the ocean dumping of Fukushima nuclear wastewater.”
