경주시는 24일 서악동 일원에서 경주농협특수미쌀작목회 주관으로 '2026년 첫 벼베기 행사'를 열고 조생종 벼 수확에 나섰다.

이날 행사에는 주낙영 경주시장과 최준식 경주농협 조합장, 작목회원 등 80여 명이 참석했다. 주 시장은 직접 콤바인을 운전하며 벼를 수확하고 현장 농업인들을 격려했다.

이번에 수확한 품종은 조생종인 '해담벼'다. 지난 4월 21일 모내기를 한 뒤 약 4개월 만에 수확기에 접어들었다.

해담벼는 쓰러짐에 비교적 강하고 도열병 등 병해에도 강한 특성을 갖춘 품종이다. 밥맛이 좋은 것으로 알려져 햅쌀용 조기 출하 품종으로 재배되고 있다.

경주농협특수미쌀작목회에는 현재 33개 농가가 참여하고 있으며, 125㏊ 규모의 논에서 해담벼를 재배하고 있다. 올해 예상 생산량은 벼 500톤가량으로, 도정 후 쌀 생산량은 약 400톤에 이를 것으로 전망된다. 수확한 벼는 경주농협을 통해 출하될 예정이다.

경주시는 조생종 벼의 안정적인 생산과 햅쌀 조기 출하를 지원하기 위해 올해 4000만 원을 투입했다. 지원금은 종자 구입과 비료, 병해충 방제, 각종 영농자재 구입 등에 활용됐다.

이번 지원은 2023년 첫 벼베기 행사 당시 지역 농업인들이 제기한 현장 건의를 반영해 마련됐다.

주낙영 경주시장은 "무더운 날씨에도 고품질 쌀 생산을 위해 노력해 온 농업인들의 노고에 감사드린다"며 "농가의 경영 부담을 줄이고 경주 쌀의 경쟁력을 높일 수 있도록 안정적인 생산 기반을 마련하고 판로를 넓히는 데 힘쓰겠다"고 말했다.
