Robots and Science in One Place in Pohang… Intelligent Robot Competition and Family Science Festival to be Held in September
Pohang City is hosting a large-scale event where visitors can experience future robot technology and science in everyday life all in one place.
Pohang City, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, the Korea Institute of Robotics & Convergence (KIRO), and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) will jointly host the "26th Korea Intelligent Robot Competition" and the "22nd Pohang Family Science Festival" for two days, from the 5th to the 6th of next month, at Manindang Hall in the Pohang Sports Complex.
The Korea Intelligent Robot Competition, which began in 1999, marks its 26th anniversary this year. It is a leading domestic robot competition that has discovered creative technologies and ideas in the robotics field and supported the challenges of talented individuals in the industry.
This year's finals will be held in three categories: Intelligent Robots, Defense Robots, and Performance Robots. Twenty-one teams that passed the preliminary rounds are scheduled to take the stage to showcase their technologies. The participating teams by category consist of 10 teams in intelligent robots, 5 teams in defense robots, and 6 teams in performance robots.
The participating teams will exhibit and demonstrate their robot technologies at individual booths set up at the event venue. Citizens visiting the site can also participate in voting, and the results of the citizen voting panel will be reflected in the selection of the Popularity Award winner.
Two humanoid robots named "Uchibot" will perform on the opening stage. Following the opening ceremony, there will also be a time for visitors to take photos with the robots. A stamp tour is also scheduled to allow visitors to explore the robot exhibitions and experience programs.
At the 22nd Pohang Family Science Festival, held at the same venue, experience-oriented programs for family visitors will be conducted. A variety of content has been prepared to allow citizens to encounter scientific principles, which they might otherwise find difficult, through play and hands-on activities.
Key programs include 10 types of creative and convergent science experiences, such as the RoboDog operation experience, AI-powered quizzes, and the Robot Marathon Challenge. Hands-on programs utilizing scientific principles, such as making jumping rockets, smart NFC, and windsurfing models, will also be offered.
Side events, including magic shows and face painting, will also take place, providing a variety of entertainment for families with children.
The "Meet the Scientist" program, designed to popularize science, will also be held during the event. Professor Jang Hong-je of the Department of Chemistry at Kwangwoon University will deliver a lecture on the theme of "Fascinating Chemistry Stories Around Us," introducing various phenomena encountered in daily life along with their chemical principles.
A Pohang City official stated, "By hosting these two events together, we have created an opportunity to showcase the challenges of talented individuals in the robotics field and allow citizens to experience science and technology firsthand. We hope this serves as a chance to foster scientific curiosity among children and youth, and for citizens to experience future technologies up close."
Detailed information regarding the event can be found on the websites of the Korea Institute of Robotics and Convergence (KIRO) and the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP).
