Discussions on government-level financial support for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport are expected to proceed in earnest. The discussions are gaining momentum as the fiscal authorities expressed their willingness to participate in the formation of a pan-government consultative body during the National Assembly's Special Committee on Budget and Accounts.

Until now, the fiscal authorities had shown a passive attitude toward the consultative body, citing the fact that the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport project is proceeding via a "donation-for-transfer" method and is therefore not a government-funded project. However, the atmosphere changed on the 25th during the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts' comprehensive policy inquiry, when Representative Yoon Jae-ok (Daegu Dalseo-gu Eul) strongly criticized the government's lukewarm response.

On that day, Representative Yoon directly requested that Minister of Strategy and Budget Park Hong-keun participate in the pan-government consultative body to devise financial support measures for the integrated new airport project. Representative Yoon pointed out, "If a support plan already exists, there is no need to ask for participation in the TF." He added, "We are asking to find a solution together because there is no plan yet, so it is nonsensical to avoid consultation by claiming that a plan has not been decided."

In response, Minister Park officially replied, “Given the intent behind the supplementary opinion on the 2026 budget proposal, we will proceed with discussions.” With the financial authorities expressing their intention to participate in pan-government consultations, discussions on financial support for the integrated new airport are expected to gain further momentum.

Directions for institutional improvements regarding the relocation of military airports were also presented. Minister of National Defense Ahn Kyu-baek stated that if the law is amended for the relocation of the Gwangju military airport, Daegu will also need institutional improvements that consider the project's characteristics and regional equity. Minister Ahn emphasized, “If the law regarding the Gwangju military airport changes, Daegu must naturally follow suit with institutional improvements, taking into account inter-regional equity and the project's characteristics,” adding, “There will be no situation where certain regions are allowed while others are excluded.”

This stance is interpreted to mean that if the system regarding the relocation of the Gwangju military airport changes in the future, the same institutional support will be required for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport.

Because the integrated new airport project has been pursued through a donation-to-transfer method, there have been consistent demands for the government to play a role in securing project funding and financial resources. In particular, given the massive project costs and the current real estate market conditions, there are many criticisms that relying solely on a private sector approach has its limitations.

Representative Yoon Jae-ok reiterated the need to quickly establish a pan-government consultative body to devise concrete financial support measures. He urged, “As the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport already transcends a regional project and holds significant meaning for balanced national development and security, the government must take a more active role.”

With both the financial authorities and the Ministry of National Defense acknowledging the need for consultation and institutional improvements regarding the integrated new airport project following this parliamentary inquiry, attention is now focused on how concrete discussions on government-level financial support will materialize in the future.
