Ecopro BM Sets Out to Build a Solid-State Battery Value Chain from Raw Materials to Cells

Ecopro BM is establishing a collaborative system involving industry, academia, and research institutes that encompasses raw materials, components, and cells to accelerate the early commercialization of solid-state batteries, which are garnering attention as the next generation of batteries.

Ecopro BM announced on the 31st that it held a kickoff meeting for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's "Super B Project" on the 26th in Gyeonggi Province, attended by solid-state battery-related companies and research institutions, and has begun full-scale joint research.

The "Super B Project" is a government initiative that supports the research and development of key materials, components, and equipment companies with the goal of securing world-class technology capable of leading the global supply chain. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy selected five companies, including Ecopro BM, as target companies for the project.

In this project, Ecopro BM is responsible for developing sulfide-based solid electrolytes, a key material for solid-state batteries. All-solid-state batteries, which replace the liquid electrolytes used in conventional lithium-ion batteries with solid materials, are expected to serve as a key power source for next-generation mobility and industrial sectors, including not only electric vehicles but also humanoid robots, as they can increase energy density while lowering the risk of fire.

Ecopro BM plans to receive high-purity lithium sulfide (Li2S) from raw material suppliers and process it into a solid electrolyte material. With mass production in mind, the company aims to enhance material competitiveness by securing key process technologies, such as crystallinity control, impurity removal, and particle size homogenization.

The developed solid electrolyte will be supplied to domestic battery cell companies. Cell companies will apply it to actual all-solid-state battery cells to verify and demonstrate performance, thereby establishing a collaborative system that links material development to cell application.

Along with the industry, research institutions and universities such as the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and Hanyang University are also participating in the project. The plan is to secure an integrated value chain for all-solid-state batteries by strengthening collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutes across the entire process, ranging from raw materials to the development of core materials, cell application, and verification.

Ecopro BM has already developed proprietary process technology in the field of sulfide-based solid electrolytes and is operating a pilot plant with an annual capacity of 40 tons. Based on this foundation, the company plans to accelerate the development of technologies that enhance the stability and productivity of mass production processes while lowering manufacturing costs.

With the goal of early commercialization of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries by 2027, the company plans to share its development roadmap with domestic battery cell companies and expand the scope of cooperation.

Jeong Hyun-soo, Head of Future Technology at Ecopro BM, stated, "Based on the technology secured from the pilot plant, we will focus on optimizing processes suitable for mass production and lowering manufacturing costs." He added, "We will continuously advance our differentiated process technologies to actively support the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries by domestic cell companies."
