Pohang Jungang-dong Opens New Building… Mayor Park Yong-seon Seeks Revitalization of Old Downtown Through Communication with Residents

The Pohang City Jungang-dong Administrative Welfare Center has completed its relocation to a new building to replace its aging facility and has welcomed residents. Taking the opening of the new building as an opportunity, Pohang City has begun communicating with residents to share local issues and revitalize the old downtown area.

On the 4th, Pohang City held an opening ceremony at the new Jungang-dong Administrative Welfare Center building, attended by approximately 100 people, including Mayor Park Yong-seon, provincial and city council members, residents, and relevant officials. Following the ceremony, the "9th Term of the Elected Administration: Jungang-dong Empathy and Communication Meeting" was held to listen to residents' opinions regarding daily inconveniences and local issues.

After celebrating the construction of the new building with residents at the opening ceremony, Mayor Park Yong-seon personally toured the interior, inspecting key facilities such as the civil service office and meeting rooms.

The new building is a project undertaken to resolve the issue of the aging condition of the existing Jungang-dong building. The existing city hall, built in 1996, had been in use for over 30 years, leading to severe deterioration of facilities such as wall cracks and water leaks.

Consequently, Pohang City began construction on the new city hall last June and completed the project this June after approximately one year of work. The new building, with a total floor area of 988 square meters and three stories above ground, was completed.

The new city hall features an efficient spatial layout designed with the convenience of residents in mind, and the spaces for civil affairs and administrative tasks have been improved. Shared spaces for residents, such as meeting rooms, have also been provided; the building is intended to be utilized not only for providing administrative services but also as a venue for communication and interaction among residents.

The site of the new city hall also holds special significance. It is the former site of the Citizens' Apartment complex that was damaged by the 2017 Pohang Earthquake, where a disaster-damaged space has been transformed into a new living space for residents.

Furthermore, by linking with the waterfront area created through the Haksancheon Ecological River Restoration Project, the city anticipates positive effects on increasing nearby visitors and pedestrian traffic, as well as revitalizing the commercial district in the old city center. At the empathy and communication meeting held following the opening ceremony, current issues and development directions for Jungang-dong were discussed as the main agenda. Mayor Park explained the operational direction and major policies of the 9th popular election administration and listened directly to suggestions from residents.

In particular, regarding the daily inconveniences and current issues raised by local residents, he emphasized field-oriented administration by jointly reviewing the implementation direction and solutions for each specific matter.

Pohang Mayor Park Yong-seon stated, "I hope the newly opened Jungang-dong Administrative Welfare Center will establish itself as a space where residents can use administrative services more conveniently and communicate freely," adding, "It is especially meaningful to be able to directly hear the diverse opinions of residents alongside the opening of the new building."

He continued, "Jungang-dong is the central area of the original downtown that has shared in Pohang's history and development," and declared, "I will carefully examine the opinions conveyed by residents and responsibly manage relevant issues to breathe new vitality into the region and allow citizens to directly experience the changes."
