Gyeongju Daereungwon: Encountering the Millennium Silla Through Cutting-Edge Media Art
A media art event reinterpreting the history and culture of the Millennium Silla through cutting-edge video technology has kicked off at Daereungwon in Gyeongju.
Gyeongju City announced on the 7th that it held the opening ceremony for the "2026 National Heritage Media Art Gyeongju Daereungwon" on the 4th at the plaza in front of Tomb No. 90 in Daereungwon, marking the official start of the event.
Held under the theme "Daereungwon, Eternity (Beyond a Thousand Years to Eternity)," the event will run for 24 days until the 27th. During the event, visitors can enjoy various media art content and experiential programs throughout the Daereungwon area every day from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
The event is hosted by the National Heritage Administration, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongju City, and organized by the National Heritage Promotion Agency and the Silla Cultural Heritage Research Institute.
The opening ceremony began with a performance by Master Singer Jeong Sun-im, followed by the stage presentation of "The Light Awakened from a Thousand-Year Sleep," a fantasy epic based on historical figures of Silla. The stories of Queen Seondeok, Kim Yu-sin, King Munmu, and Great Monk Wonhyo were presented through videos and performances, conveying the history and culture of Silla to visitors in a new way.
During the event period, four major ancient tombs within Daereungwon are utilized as media facade stages, each embodying historical significance.
Tomb No. 90 highlights the formation of the Gyeongju Basin and the origins of Silla, while the Tomb of King Michu visualizes the history of the Silla dynasty, centered around the three surnames of Park, Seok, and Kim. Hwangnamdaechong portrays the prosperity and glory of Silla, and Cheonmachong depicts the nation's representative golden cultural heritage using 3D graphics.
Spaces have also been prepared for nighttime visitors. A "Forest of Light" has been created along the section connecting the entrance of Daereungwon to the Central Plaza, utilizing firefly lighting, lasers, and fog to create a unique atmosphere for Daereungwon at night.
Programs allowing visitors to directly experience the history and culture of Silla are held at the Central Plaza. Activities include the night docent tour "Ah, the Night of Silla," "Writing Wishes on Light Balls," "Making LED Golden Crowns," and "UV Glow-in-the-Dark Artifact Excavation Experience."
Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nak-young said, "We prepared this event so that people can experience the historical and archaeological value of Daereungwon and Silla culture in a new way through media technology," adding, "I hope citizens and tourists will enjoy the history of Silla and the light together at Daereungwon on an autumn night."
