“The Light of Millennium Silla, Into the Lives of Residents and the Local Community”… Gyeongju Seeks ‘Cultural Convergence’ Combining Media Art

- ‘Flashback Gyerim’ Partners with Gyeongju’s Local Brands and Commercial Districts to Strengthen the Public Accessibility of Experiential Culture

- Expanding Cultural Accessibility for Pet Families, Promoting Local Economic Revitalization through Wellness Yoga Programs and Hanbok Linkages

With the arrival of autumn, a new form of public cultural promotion combining local cultural resources with local commercial districts is taking place in Gyeongju. It is drawing attention as an initiative that goes beyond simple viewing-centered exhibitions to combine the improvement of the quality of life for local residents, cultural welfare for pet families, and mutual growth within the local community.

The Gyeongju Media Art Exhibition Hall, ‘Flashback Gyerim,’ announced that it will operate a variety of community-coexistence programs throughout September in collaboration with Gyeongju’s local brands and commercial districts. This initiative was organized to foster mutual development with local commercial areas and to provide visitors and residents with broad opportunities to enjoy culture.

The most eye-catching feature is the ‘Nighttime Dog-Friendly Viewing Program,’ designed with consideration for culturally marginalized groups and diverse visitor demographics. In collaboration with ‘Kinox,’ a pet-friendly accommodation facility within the Gyeongju Bomun Tourist Complex, the event will operate daily from 6 PM to 9 PM, from September 1 to 30.

It is evaluated as having laid the foundation for pet-owning families to enjoy local cultural resources without exclusion by lowering the barrier to entry for indoor cultural and artistic spaces, where pet accompaniment was previously restricted. This is garnering anticipation as a local collaboration that revitalizes the nighttime local economy around the Bomun Complex by encouraging stay-type tourism.

A new public-interest wellness program designed to help modern people recover their physical and mental well-being will also be established. ‘Time to Awaken with Light,’ a collaboration with the local Gyeongju yoga brand ‘Yogayeon,’ will be held as a small-group premium course every Saturday at 9 AM starting September 12. This is an attempt to transform a media art space centered on Silla history content into a healing space for citizens and visitors.

In addition, linked promotions aimed at fostering mutual growth with local small business owners will be held in succession. Representative examples include discounts for customers at Hanbok rental shops on Hwangnidan-gil and a lucky draw event linked to social media verification, all part of efforts to revitalize Hanbok culture. Furthermore, a "Golden Invitation" presentation event featuring a "Silla Hwarang" concept will take place on weekends from the 24th to October 17th in the Hwangnidan-gil and Bomun Tourist Complex areas. Beyond this, an outdoor marketplace for mutual growth will be held on October 17th and 18th in conjunction with Gyeongju's representative flea market, "Dodam Market," to support sales channels for local creators and small business owners.

Kim Seong-hwan, Director of Flashback Gyerim, stated, "This initiative goes beyond promoting a single exhibition hall; it is an attempt to expand the foundation of local culture by breathing together with Gyeongju's local brands and commercial districts." He added, "Moving forward, we will continue to contribute to the local community by utilizing the modern medium of media art and deliver differentiated cultural value to visitors of Gyeongju." Meanwhile, detailed information on this regional collaboration program and how to participate can be found on the official Flashback Guilin channels.
