It has been revealed that 269 industrial accidents involving school cafeteria workers in the Daegu region occurred over the past five years, raising concerns that active improvements are needed regarding the working environment and safety management systems in cafeterias.
According to data submitted to Daegu Metropolitan Council member Kim Ju-beom by the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education, a total of 269 industrial accidents involving school cafeteria workers were recorded from 2022 to August 31, 2026.
The number of incidents by year was 43 in 2022, 67 in 2023, 59 in 2024, and 71 in 2025, while 29 cases were recorded as of the end of August 2026. Notably, 2025 recorded the highest number of incidents (71 cases) among the last five years.
By type of accident, burns were the most frequent with 78 cases, followed by falls with 60, musculoskeletal disorders with 52, and being struck or collided with 32.
Among these, the top three types—burns, falls, and musculoskeletal disorders—accounted for a total of 190 cases, representing 70.6% of all industrial accidents. This is analyzed as a result of major risk factors acting as the high-temperature cooking environment unique to school cafeterias, slippery floors, the transportation of heavy ingredients and cooking equipment, and repetitive tasks.
Representative Kim Joo-beom pointed out, “School cafeterias are workplaces where risk factors such as high heat, steam, slippery floors, and repetitive handling of heavy objects are ever-present,” adding, “As similar accidents repeat every year, we must transition to a safety management system focused on prevention.” He continued by emphasizing, “Field-oriented improvement measures are urgently needed, such as strengthening inspections of risk factors at each school and expanding facilities to prevent slips and burns, as well as equipment to reduce musculoskeletal strain,” adding, “Relevant budgets must be prioritized for recurring types of accidents.”
Representative Kim stated, “Creating safe school cafeterias is an issue directly linked to the stable operation of school meals and the safety of students, going beyond merely improving the working environment for food service workers,” and declared, “I will continue to push for improvements in systems and environments so that practical budgets and policies for industrial accident prevention can operate effectively in the field.”
