Gyeongbuk Province Urges National Assembly to Expedite Review of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Administrative Integration Special Act
Gyeongbuk Province is accelerating its push for administrative integration by visiting the National Assembly to request the swift review and passage of the "Special Act on Daegu-Gyeongbuk Administrative Integration," which is currently pending before the Legislation and Judiciary Committee.
On the 8th, Lee Sang-su, Director of the Local Government Strategy Bureau at Gyeongbuk Province, visited the National Assembly to meet with Seo Young-kyo, Chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. He explained the necessity of the special act and urged the committee to expedite its review.
During the meeting, Gyeongbuk Province emphasized that the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration is not merely a project serving the interests of a specific region, but a national balanced development initiative aimed at alleviating the capital-centric structure and establishing a new foundation for growth in non-capital regions.
In particular, the province explained that for local governments to directly formulate and implement growth strategies tailored to local conditions, they must be backed by substantive administrative authority and financial support. The aim is to establish a new model of regional development that enhances local autonomy and strengthens regional competitiveness through administrative integration.
Chair Seo reportedly expressed agreement with the purpose and necessity of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration and pledged to support its smooth implementation.
Gyeongbuk Province is also noting that discussions on administrative integration are gaining momentum in other regions. For the Jeonnam-Gwangju integration initiative launched last July, 5 trillion won in government financial support has been confirmed for next year, and follow-up measures—such as the creation of a support fund for integrated local governments—are currently underway.
Discussions regarding integration between metropolitan local governments are continuing across the political landscape, with the possibility of administrative integration between Daejeon and Chungnam also being raised. North Gyeongsang Province views the upcoming regular session of the National Assembly in September as a critical juncture for the passage of the special act on the administrative integration of Daegu and North Gyeongsang, and plans to concentrate its administrative efforts on persuading the legislature. The province intends to actively engage in the review process while continuously explaining the bill's necessity and its potential to drive regional development to key figures, including members of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, leadership from both ruling and opposition parties, and local lawmakers.
North Gyeongsang Governor Lee Cheol-woo and Daegu Mayor Chu Kyung-ho previously agreed during a meeting last July to join forces to ensure the special act passes during the September regular session. Accordingly, both Daegu and North Gyeongsang will continue their collaborative efforts to persuade the National Assembly and the political community.
A provincial official stated, "The administrative integration of Daegu and North Gyeongsang is not merely about altering the local administrative structure; it is a crucial initiative to establish a foundation for self-reliant growth in non-capital regions." The official added, "We will cooperate closely with relevant agencies and strengthen communication with the National Assembly to ensure the special act undergoes a swift review during the regular session."
