2026 Gyeongbuk Bio-Industry Expo Kicks Off in Andong on the 10th; Accelerating the Advanced Bio-Industry
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Andong City are organizing an event to share the latest technologies and industry trends in the advanced bio-sector and to expand the foundation for cooperation among companies, research institutions, universities, and investment agencies.
The "2026 Gyeongbuk Bio-Industry Expo" will be held for three days, from September 10 to 12, in the vicinity of the Andong Gymnasium. Marking its fifth edition this year, the event is themed "Gyeongbuk Opening the Future of Advanced Bio."
Co-hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do and Andong City and organized by the Gyeongbuk Bio-Industry Institute, the event involves participation from institutions such as Gyeongbuk National University, KAIST, the Animal Cell Demonstration Support Center, the Gyeongbuk IT Convergence Industry Technology Institute, and Yeungnam University’s Cell Culture Research Institute.
Key programs include an advanced bio-conference, an exhibition and hands-on fair featuring bio-companies, business investment and purchasing consultation sessions, and a job fair.
On the opening day (the 10th), Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang, and SK Bioscience CEO Ahn Jae-yong will attend. On this day, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Andong City, and KAIST plan to sign a business agreement aimed at fostering bio- and food-tech industries utilizing advanced biotechnology and strengthening competitiveness in future food sectors.
Under the agreement, the three institutions will cooperate on fostering industries for future foods and bio-materials using synthetic biology and precision fermentation technologies; establishing public infrastructure for Living Modified Organisms (LMO); adding high value to and commercializing local agricultural and food resources; and training specialized personnel in the advanced bio- and food-tech fields.
Following the signing ceremony, KAIST Professor Lee Sang-yup will deliver a keynote speech on the topic of "Systems Metabolic Engineering Enabling Biomanufacturing." The event will showcase the potential for future biomanufacturing technology advancements and outline directions for industrial application.
Around 70 domestic and international experts will participate in the Advanced Bio Conference, held over two days starting on the 10th. Discussions will focus on the latest technologies and industrialization strategies across five key sectors: vaccines, cannabis and natural products, advanced regenerative medicine, cell culture, and synthetic biology.
Exhibitions and hands-on experiences will also be available. At the main arena of the Andong Gymnasium, approximately 80 bio-sector companies and organizations—including SK Bioscience—will showcase their products, technologies, and research achievements. The event is designed to allow the general public to engage with the bio-industry through features such as a Gyeongbuk-Andong themed pavilion, corporate exhibition halls, and a beauty experience zone.
Corporate support programs will include investment and purchasing consultation sessions involving domestic and overseas buyers. In addition to supporting companies in attracting investment and expanding sales channels, a job fair for university students majoring in bio-related fields will be held to connect local talent with companies.
Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang stated, "I hope this expo serves as a collaborative platform connecting bio-sector technologies, companies, talent, and investment." He added, "We will build upon our vaccine industry foundation to expand our competitiveness into the advanced bio sector, ultimately developing Andong into a bio-industry city that garners attention both domestically and internationally." <저작권자 ⓒ 브레이크뉴스 대구경북 무단전재 및 재배포 금지>
