Daegu’s Hajungdo Island to Transform into a Year-Round Waterfront Attraction... 20 Billion Won Invested to Create a Waterfront Space
Daegu City has officially launched a project to transform Hajungdo Island in the Geumho River into a premier waterfront space that citizens and tourists can visit throughout the four seasons.
On the 9th, the city held a briefing to kick off the basic and detailed design phase for the "Hajungdo Waterfront Space Creation and Landmark Development Project"—one of the five key hub projects for the Geumho River—and discussed the project's direction.
A total of 20 billion won will be invested in the project, with funding split equally between the central and municipal governments (10 billion won each). The plan involves completing the basic and detailed designs this year and finalizing the entire project by 2029.
Hajungdo is a natural ecological island located in the Geumho River, which flows through the heart of Daegu. It has long attracted visitors during events such as spring and autumn flower garden openings and garden expos. However, due to significant seasonal fluctuations in usage and a lack of adequate accessibility and amenities, there have been persistent calls to upgrade the site to increase its year-round utility.
Through this project, Daegu City aims to expand visitor demand—currently concentrated in specific seasons—to cover all four seasons. Plans include creating observation areas to enjoy the Geumho River’s sunset and surrounding natural scenery, as well as multi-purpose spaces for cultural events, exhibitions, and citizen relaxation.
Various amenities will also be expanded to enhance visitor convenience. The city intends to transform Hajungdo from a merely seasonal flower-viewing spot into a waterfront space where citizens can visit and spend time in their daily lives.
In particular, given its location in the center of Daegu, Hajungdo is expected to play a pivotal role in extending the scope of waterfront space utilization into the downtown area when linked with existing Geumho River hub projects. Daegu City plans to strengthen connectivity between key hubs—including the Hajungdo project—while developing the entire stretch of the Geumho River into a waterfront space that integrates leisure, culture, and sports activities.
Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stated, "With the commencement of the design phase, the project to create a waterfront space at Hajungdo and transform it into a landmark attraction has entered full swing." He added, "We will ensure the project proceeds without setbacks to create a new landmark along the Geumho River where citizens can comfortably visit, relax, and enjoy themselves regardless of the season."
